Be aware that bicyclists use both ends of Astronomy Trail to ride downhill fast to the point of being out of control. Keep your eyes and ears open. Underfoot, this trail is rocky. Blueberry and mountain laurel were growing into the trail when I hiked it. Astronomy Trail is typical hardwood forest in various stages of regrowth. Note lack of soil cover at top of the mountain, where old timbering practices probably caused more erosion. More seed trees were left in more recently cut areas. One area has dense growth of new trees that are growing from old stumps. The lower end of Gilbert Road is cool and shaded, with some rhododendrons.

Nice trail for spring or fall, summer gets too grown up. Have also seen timber rattlesnakes and deer on this trail.
