Nice walk. Trail is rocky, but we are in PA. Milage is clearly wrong as most reviews state. I got 11 miles.

Rocky

Hiked in November of 2019. No one else on entire trail--except for resident caretaker at 501 shelter. Rocky and slow due to leaves obscuring the ground, but the views were terrific. Water is available, but plan ahead because a long part of the hike is dry. Ridge hiking portion was windy and cold. I didn't climb the Shower Steps, but I want to. It would be a great lunch date hike. it would be a good up-and-down hike by itself.

This was the location for my second backpacking adventure and it was a good one with a nice mix of terrain—a mix of flat, hills, rocky, wet. It was just the right amount of challenging for me with a full pack in my late 50s and my second time out, it was a great experience. I would definitely do this again.

We did this with our 14 year old daughter and 16 year old son as an overnight backpacking trip. Perfect distance for us because it gave us the late afternoon a evening to hang at our campsite! Rocky terrain made it fun and the views were beautiful! A fun watering hole with a rope swing about 6 miles in from 501. Will do this again! We brought our 5 year old lab and he did great - but the rocks tore up his pads. We should have had his booties along! My Fitbit said 13 - 14 miles. (I agree with the other post about it being closer to 10+miles!)

starting at route 183 we actually extended the hike past route 501 to route 645 ( Geary Wolfe rd) was just over 12 miles ( route 183 to route 501 is actually just over 10 miles review says 9 miles ) it adds 1 - 2 beautiful overlooks nice parking area at route 645 not a workout trail but distance make up for that was easy to moderate trail

Can get very rocky at times but the view from the 501 lookout never gets old!
