This section of the AHT takes one up and over the Eastern Continental Divide, that point being just east of Deal where the trail cuts through a culvert beneath Old Deal Road. The keystone of the trail is the Big Savage Tunnel. A $13 million refurbishment project of the 3294.6 foot tunnel has lights and doors to keep out the winter cold. At the eastern portal there is a spectacular panoramic view into Maryland. The trail on the western side of Big Savage has an average grade of .8%. The trail on the eastern face has a grade of 1.75%.
