I didn't see anyone on the trail today. well maintained and not as muddy as I expected. I did 5miles out and came back. looks like trail continue but very disappointed that there's no view at the end.
3.5 Stars for this well maintained, though narrow trail. We hiked from Keenig TH to Footbridge. Pros: Uncrowded (only met 7 other people on a day nearby Kings Mtn. trail parking lot overflowed with cars); Much less muddy than expected --even after 2 days of heavy rains; Easy elevation gains; Neither too steep or too long for moderate distance hikers; several tiny streams and falls along the trail; plenty of parking at the Keening TH. Cons: No views to speak of; road noise from Hwy. 26 echoes for miles; much of the trail is narrow, making it difficult for groups and aggressive, unmasked runners who appear without warning(!) to pass safely during the pandemic. Side note: we stopped for a short break at one of the few level outcrops on the trail, approx. 2.5 miles from Keenig Cr parking lot. In less than 2 minutes the 3 of us were warned off by loud, deep growls from a few feet away. We suspect there's a bear cave just below the outcropping, so caution is advised when hiking alone or with an unleashed dog.
Lots of branches on the trail from the storms. Too humid for my asthma. Shortened my journey. Maybe another time.
Lots of leaves on the trail, but it was quiet and single track all the way. Good mountain biking trail.
Solid hike. Not much payoff for some views but if you are ok with that it’s a good little workout. Only saw two small groups at heading at the beginning and heading out again at the beginning. Had the trail to myself otherwise (started around 1pm on a Friday)
It was a great workout.. and a beautiful trail! We started at the end. It was better because the pretty bridges and “waterfalls” were at the beginning.. we took the highway back to our car. It was beautiful and definitely a good leg workout. Took us about 4 hours to complete the hike, minus the stopping...
Keening creek trail head. Quick elevation gain then flat for the 3 miles I went in
I would recommend this hike to anyone wanting to get a good workout while also having some beautiful scenery. Definitely has some steep ascents but the waterfalls and mountaintop views along the way make it enjoyable. If you have poles I would recommend bringing them. I didn’t bring mine and am certain I will be sore tomorrow.
Missed the Elk Mountain Trail so we ended up doing a bit on the Wilson River Trail instead. Nice gentle hike, if unexpected.
Great trail, bring some poles, nice to pull your self up when your legs become toast. I kept going after the end made it back to the river, added more miles and a huge decent. My knees, calves, and hamstrings are thanking me tonight for bringing poles, incredible hill work out. Plenty of waterfalls running right now early Jan’19, I drank from the ones my dogs trusted, taste amazing, not recommended, but I do have a filter on my hydration source. Look for all the dead trees along the way, they are so alive In each of their own way
Nice quiet hike. Note that one trail map shows Wolf Creek Road going all the way through from the Keening Creek trail head to the intersection with the trail (about I mile from the Footbridge trailhead). WOLF CREEK ROAD does not go through but dead ends in someone's driveway on the Keening Creek end. So, if you're looking to do a loop hike and were considering using Wolf Creek Road, it doesn't go through.
