WalkingGreat!

Quiet forested trail. Not that many views in September to make it a bucket list trip for a non-local. I could see this being a very nice place to enjoy an easy hike with friend if you live nearby.

Great little loop. We did it clockwise and it was very lightly traveled until the turnoff for Moraine Lake. Also way more gradual this way too. Downhill was steep but fun (and busier). All in all a nice hike!

Great - leave early to avoid the heat. Clockwise, the way up is nice and gradual. The way down is steeper and dustier. Beautiful views. Didn’t catch anyone on the way up until we were more than halfway through our hike

HikingGreat!

Went clockwise. Hardly saw anyone on the trail. I did this last minute and didn’t pay attention to the directions and ended up taking a wrong turn down another trail a few times; there are several other trails that cross with this one. Be sure to go to Moraine Lake to make this trail worth it. Gave 4 stars because it without the lake or continuing onto another trail, it wasn’t really worth the hike. Would rather do out and back counterclockwise to the lake and back. Gave me a glimpse into the start of the trail before hiking the South Sister though!

Hiking

A great loop I've never hiked before today. The incline going west and clockwise on Wickiup Plain loop is far more gradual than the standard South Sister climbing trail straight north of Devil's Lake. I would argue this easier route is more scenic and varied too. It's not nearly as crowded either. There are other trail splits along the loop I'd like to explore someday also. Our hike wasn't smokey even though the mountains looked completely covered in wildfire smoke the day before, viewing from Hwy 97. We benefited from a favorable wind I guess. I was amazed to find parking at the trailhead. No clue why it wasn't jam-packed as it usually is, especially leading up to Labor Day weekend.

HikingBugsGreat!

We went counter clockwise to get the steep part out of the way first, then coasted the rest of the way. Beautiful sections of forest and great views of the mountains. The bugs went after my fiance despite his bug spray, but I didn't use any and they left me alone. Quite a bit of horse poop on the last half of the trail.

Although it was hot and a bit dusty, this was a great hike and the best, less crowded way to get to Moraine Lake. A grand views of South Sisters. All in all, with the add on of Moraine, we clocked 7.7 miles.

Beautiful clockwise loop from Devil’s Lake campground up Wickiup Plain to Moraine Lake trails and coming down the SS Climbers Trail. Breezy warm conditions.

We went counterclockwise. It was a beast to get up the beginning haul, but it made the rest super enjoyable.

HikingGreat!

I give this loop 5 stars for one reason--easiest way to get to Moraine with almost seeing zero people and not even moderate-level hiking (most is flat, Devil's is all downhill). View of South Sister is beautiful from the lake and you bottom out on the south side away from the Green Lakes folks coming in AND you can head up to higher elevation on the SS Summit Trail to distance even further. Water is warm too! Bugs almost gone!

HikingBlowdown

HORSE RIDERS BEWARE- there is a big tree down (branches still attached) across the tail towards the top of where you can get with horses (within 5 minutes of where the 'loop' meets the trail to the top of south sister). I was hiking when I did this trail yesterday, but I ride myself and know horses, and there's no way a horse could get over that tree. As a person I could climb over it, but a horse or pony or donkey could not. It's a pretty steep drop off and there's not much space for a horse to turn around. It might be possible if you're keeping an eye out for the downed tree to spot it before getting within a few horse lengths of it to have the horse scale the L (uphill) side of the slope by the trail and make it up 20-50 ft to where it levels off, but I'm not sure, and wouldn't want to be on their back if I tried that. Pretty trail, but very narrow in places for horses. Lots of sharp lava rocks on the lowest part of the trail, and some steep drop offs higher up.

I’ve hiked this trail before in both directions. Today I went clockwise and decided the views are better that way. It’s always a winner.

Great trail!! Be careful going though. Lots of snow still on the trail with downed trees. Definitely take waterproof boots. Some spots are are steep so be careful with the snowfall. Also due to the snowfall it was hard to find the trail 80% of the time as of June 3rd. Based on the amount of snow I’d say it will take until mid July for all the snow to melt if you aren’t wanting to deal with snow. Tons of great spots to see the cascades though if you do decide to take this trail.

Great trail with open views of South Sister and Broken Top. Trail is well maintained and clearly marked. There are opportunities to extend your hike, as the trail links up to several others. We extended ours by hiking to Moraine Lake and then returning to the original loop trail. This adds on about 2 miles if you’re going down to the lake, and it’s worth it!

I backpacked and camped with my 8yo and 10yo daughters in early July. They complained a bit about the elevation but were totally capable. We hiked clockwise as suggested by others so that we had a more gradual incline. The mosquitos we HORRIBLE though. The ranger said by end of July they should be gone, wish we had know that before our hike. We didn’t see any animals, just insects and heard some birds. There is no water on the hike so pack in whatever you need

One of my favorites ! Not as crowded as Green Lakes, but just a spectacular on the eyes ! If you have extra time - the hike out to the PCT next to Le Conte Crater is more than worth it - views of South Sister to the north are amazing !!!
