Easy hike amongst old growth trees to a ridge overlooking Siuslaw River. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, swimming, hiking, and camping at Whittaker Creek. The site offers family camping in a wooded riverside location with a hiking trail that provides access to an old growth stand of Douglas Fir high above the campground. The Old Growth Ridge Trail was designated in 1994 as a National Recreation Trail due to the exceptional wildlife, geologic features, and old growth trees that are typical of coast range ecosystems. Chinook and coho salmon, as well as steelhead trout can be observed in the fall and winter months in the creek next to the campground. The site also features a paved boat ramp that provides drift boat and canoe access to the Siuslaw River.

Great hike through old growth. No real view at the top but lots of sneak views. It is pretty steep going up but not too bad if you are in ok shape. The dogs loved it!

A nice hike with a decent ascent to the top. Doing the entire loop seemed a bit longer than the listed 3.1 miles and it took about an hour and a half to complete at a leisurely pace. A little surprised it's not rated as moderate due to the climb but if you're in decent shape it shouldn't be a problem.
There were several great informational plaques along the way to let you know what we were looking at and there were also a few logs and large branches to maneuver around but overall the trail was in good shape for February. Only saw one other group of hikers despite it being a Saturday afternoon with picture perfect weather.

I'll rate this as a 5 star for what it is, a fairly easy hike. The view on the summit was lacking because it was basically a peak with little room for any view. But it was the top and it felt good making it there. The trails were clearly marked and maintained, even after this last ice storm. I saw some large salmon in the creek that flows into the Siuslaw, that was pretty awesome. I spotted a crane or heron flying out of that same creek. The bird songs near the top really added some great atmosphere. It was worth the time and effort and would gladly go again.

Nice BLM trail. Can see salmon spawning in Whittaker Creek certain times of year. Trail goes through some riparian areas and climbs up quickly through some old growth. Not a great view at the summit, but nice hike.
