Wauna Viewpoint Trail is a 3.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Cascade Locks, Oregon that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is best used from April until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
I tried to get to the top today. I never passed any sign that said it was closed. There is a bunch of trees blocking areas. lots of thorny bushes on the trail. I got about 2 switchbacks from the end of this trail but turned back as my dog was done with this trail
As with any trail on the south side of the gorge, there's a fair amount of 84 traffic noise most of the way up. We didn't make it all the way to the top because of rock/landslides, but we found one decent view of the Columbia. Not sure how the view at the top compares to other hikes.
Beautiful trail with a great viewpoint. Good elevation gain, but nothing too difficult. There was still a few inches of snow in most spots today (12/26), but I did it without micro spikes and there was only one tough spot close to the viewpoint where the trail gets narrow. Only saw one other person while I was there, so it was nice and quiet if you can tune out the highway. Definitely recommend, especially in the snow!
Great little hike. Did it in the afternoon. 5ish. Had it all to myself. Passed two couples going down as I was coming up. Awesome views of Mt rainier, bridge of the gods and the gorge. As mentioned by the pervious comment the road noise can be a tad annoying but it's not bad by any means.
This is a great hike. The view was beautiful! There was a landslide near the end that ruined the last switchback to the top but we managed to get by climbing over some downed trees and small rocks/boulders. It's a lot steeper than I thought/read, not for anyone with a fear or heights. My 10 year old did it well with a bit of fear and hesitation toward the end. Not crowded.
Two ways to access: 1. Tooth Ridge Trailhead parking lot -- paved road that goes east (less than one mile) -- path on the right labeled "Tanner Butte" 2. Near Eagle Creek Trailhead along the south part there is a bridge labeled "Wauna Viewpoint Trail" which also goes up This trail was less populated than other nearby trails. We only passed one family. This was a relatively easy/moderate hike with a solid path the entire time. The path became narrow without cushioning trees or weeds off to the sides close to the viewpoint, but it was only for a short distance. Excellent views of Table Mountain, Bridge of the Gods, and the Bonneville Dam from the viewpoint (called "the diving board"). You can also see Mt. Adams on the way up. The viewpoint is the area with the power lines and it's visible from the Tooth Ridge Trailhead parking lot.
