The trails around here are definitely well-used by mountain bikers. Except for the ones with downed trees of course. The section of trail with downed trees was short, but yes, very obstructed. The view at the top was worth it, though not quite as wide open as from Tumalo Mountain nearby. Walk a bit north on the lava rock beyond the beaten down trail for less trees blocking the view. I wasn't paying close attention to the map on the way down, took a wrong turn, and had to walk along the highway a short distance to get back to the small parking area. It appears there are multiple approaches to Vista Butte, as several trails are passed on the way up.

Lots of mountain bikers but everyone was very kind and slowed down for me and my dog and our friend!

The view is great considering that the hike is pretty short and not too difficult. Stunning!

If you take the first mile as indicated by the downloaded trail, you’ll run into a about hundred blowdowns blocking the road. Take the first left from the parking area. It’s a bit longer in distance but no big blowdowns. Great view at the top is worth the trek

Tremendous number of downed trees on the lower half making it very hard to stay on trail. The upper half well maintained as it’s clearly for mountain biking. Really interesting hike with decent views of Bachelor and Broken Top but prob won’t do it again.

Easy, steady climb to the top with absolutely beautiful views. Gets pretty hot in the sun so bring lots of water. Also, when you get to the trial split, go left. We accidentally went right to get some extra mileage but had to tromp over lots of downed trees. On the way down, we stuck to the trial and it was much easier. :)

Like all the other ratings state, there are a lot of downed trees at the lower part of the trail. Great hike with kids and dogs.

Nice distance for a hike with my dog that lives up to its name. I hiked this trail backwards on the loop from the directions shown in the map. Hundreds of trees down. The lower section of the loop easier to navigate despite adding a bit of distance. The upper loop was thick with downed trees making it difficult for my older- not found of climbing- dog. I was REALLY glad I had gps running; the the junction between the upper loop and forest service road would have been very difficult to pick out without it. I gave it 4 stars for the views. You can see all the way to Mt. Thielsen, Diamond Peak and if it is clearer than the day I went, I imagine the views north would be as spectacular.

Tons of logs covering the path so we couldn’t go too far. Great view of Bachelor though!

I'm a relative newbie to Bend area, arriving last Dec. I never snowshoed till last winter, but managed to climb Tumalo a few times last and this year, and also several treks around Meisner, Edison, Swampy and Tumalo Falls. That said (I'm no expert), but I'd put Vista Butte in line with Tumalo Mtn with respect to best views at the top (one place I have not yet hit is Black Butte - could be the ace in the hole?). It's easier getting up VB than TM, esp if you follow the xc ski paths, but still not totally a trivial 2 mile one-way trek up (via xc trail, potentially a lot shorter if you go direct up/down). But at the end of the day, the views:effort ratio are the best I've found in the area. Edison is unique with the lava and Pondorosa pines, but not much in the way of mountain views. Swampy Ponderosa trail isn't bad, esp at the top of the one decent ascent on the NE path, but the views at the Swampy shelter are nothing to write home about (Nordeen, before burning this winter was better). All in all, Vista Butte, imo, is one of the better showshoe paths in the Bend area.
