Beautiful waterfall over basalt cliffs into a wave-tossed pool. Toketee Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in all of Oregon, renowned far and wide for the graceful columnar basalt formation framing the two-stepped falls. The North Umpqua River has carved a sinuous gorge out of the lava flow, resulting in a waterfall of 113 feet in height - a 28 foot upper tier which plunges into a pool flanked by a deep alcove, followed by an 85 foot plunge into a large pool. At the trailhead, the wooden 12 foot diameter Toketee Pipeline is passed, which diverts much of the volume of the North Umpqua River to a powerhouse downstream. This artificial taming of the river allows the waterfall to flow in an extremely consistent manor all year long.

This hike can be both easy OR hard, friendly for both novice OR advanced hikers...depending on how far you want to go. The distance from the trailhead to the end of the trail to the viewpoint overlooking the waterfall is super easy. There are quite a number of stairs, but I saw a lot of seniors doing the hike with their canes and whatnot. Stopping at the viewpoint is no fun though. There's a hole to the right of the fence where you can crouch through and climb down a steep hill with a rope. Warning: Don't take kids, dogs, or anywhere who's scared of heights with you if you decide to go all the way down to the edge of the water. The view right at the waterfall is breathtaking and it makes the 2.5 hour drive from Eugene totally worth it!

But Don't go now, it's a dangerous hike at this point in winter. The trail is solid ice most of the way. There was a point where you could slide right off the trail and down the cliff. We had to turn back. We will go back for sure in the spring though.
