Note: The term squaw is considered universally offensive by Indigenous groups in America due to its use for hundreds of years in a derogatory context. Indigenous activists have continued to work both locally and in more general educational efforts, to rename the locations across North America that contain the slur, as well as to eliminate the slur from the lexicon in general. Easy hike for all ages. Beautiful lake scenery. Be prepared to use some intuition when finding the lakes & trail.

My first time there in the winter. Beautiful and had the whole place to myself. I hiked around the big lake and walked down to most of the campsites....also walked to the smaller lake. Had 5 miles on my Fitbit.

Great wide trail. Very easy flat ground. Lots of places to stop and enjoy lunch and scenery of lake. Seemed like lots of people enjoying lake but still found some privacy. Would highly recommend for someone with kids or older hikers. Or anyone just looking for a nice stroll in the woods. Will definitely go back for a short weekend camping trip.

Beautiful hike. Not a soul in site. Heard growling about 3/4 of the way in near the Interpretative Trail cutoff. I didn’t see anything, but sounded like a bear. Hike in groups and use caution.

Hiking

Great hike! Easy, clean and scenic. There are a few really cool camp sites along the trail. There are also a few out house type bathrooms along the trail. Very easy hike for kids as well. Super easy to catch bluegill along the banks which is also fun for the kids.

This is a very easy and nice walk around squaw lake. There are plenty of places to camp and fish. The loop can be done in well under an hour. The trail is easily accessible and can be done year round. If you are looking for complete solitude, this might not be the place since the trail is so easy and well maintained.

Absolutely loved it! Trail was very well maintained, with no garbage at all either which was fantastic. Ended up being the only people for miles around and thoroughly enjoyed the leisurely hike around the lake. Can't wait to camp here in a few weeks!

Squaw lake is a gem. Trails are wide so whole family could ride around together or enough room to share with others. There were a couple of rope swings to jump in the lake for a refreshing swim. We swam with fish and skipped rocks. Definitely going back again.

We explored here in May and the weather could not have been more perfect. At first we drove past the designated parking area, wondering what was further down the road. If you do that, it will take you to the other smaller lake that has a trail, but not around the whole lake like the other one. We didn't stay long at this spot, just long enough to check out the first picnic spot by the lake which was filled with bugs. So we got back in the car and went back to the designated parking area and walked down towards the big lake (pretty short walk). The first opening at the lake had great views, but again, tons of bugs. There was also a LOT of dog poop, so I took some time to pick it all up so my kids didn't have to worry about stepping in it. The dog and kids played in the water a bit here and then we decided to start the walk around the lake. I wish we would have walked to the right earlier, because there are much better spots to relax and swim at. And there were hardly any bugs flying in our face at the other spots. We walked around the whole lake and noticed 4 different spots with rope swings. They are in spots best suited for ages 10 and up in my opinion. But still fun to at least check out, even with little kids. I thought spot #9 was the prettiest swing spot. The water was pretty clear here and we could see lots of fish swimming around. We had the place all to ourselves and had so much fun. If you are going in the spring or summer, don't forget your bug spray!

went there in the middle of April, not a soul to be found. kinda creepy considering it's super far out in the woods. but was a good run. can be a bit hard to find, no cell service. just follow Maps and it should bring u right to it

Not a bad afternoon walk. Very pet friendly. If you start to the left of the lake the bridge and spring at the end are totally worth the hike. Once you get there, you’re almost done. It’s a long one way gravel road out. I wouldn’t suggest it for a low car or when it’s wet out.

Beautiful November walk around a quiet, clear lake. The road down to park at the trailhead was super muddy and needs gravel but once there it was worth it.

Hiking

Great, easy hike along a wide, level, and well developed path. It loops around the lake and can take as short as an hour depending on how often you to stop to swim. There are lots of places to get in the water. The water is clear and calm, and a surprisingly perfect temperature for swimming! $5 parking fee at the trailhead.

the "trail" is more like a dirt road. it's used by the ranger to help people camping haul their gear to their site. it's well maintained and clean. the lake will always be right beside you and there's areas where you can jump in for a quick swim. if you're into finding wildlife you'll want to take it slow. we were able to spot all kinds of insects and saw 3 turtles basking on a log in the lake close to the bank. the trail is flat all the way around. great hike for young children and even older hikers. pro tip: there's clearly marked numbers on each camp site, if you are thinking of camping keep in mind to look at the numbers of each site so you have have an idea of which one you'd like to reserve :)

Fun easy trail. Nie camping spots though we were only there to hike with the dogs. Short loop around the lake so we made two. The drive...especially last 5 miles on gravel is slow-going and dusty but worth it.
