clarification: the short version of Sparks Lake trail -- the 2.5 mi. loop -- is called the Ray Atkeson Memorial Trail. it is all the way down the road (past the TH + parking area marked "Sparks Lake") to the boat launch. Day use area with lots of parking and 7-10 FCFS dry camping sites along the road.

I would recommend this trail to the beginner looking for a more rigorous hike and with amazing views.

This was a really fun trail to run! But it should be known that the Sparks Lake Trail itself has no views of Sparks Lake. It has pretty much no views other than wooded pine forest area until you get to Lava Lake at the end. It was 8.5 miles to Lava Lake from the trailhead and you can make it further by going around Lava Lake. But the trail was in awesome condition. Great dirt. Smooth and flowy. 1600ft elevation gain. More uphill on the way back.

Decent hike. First time backpacking. Could not see any lakes until Lava Lake at the end of the hike. There is a campground at the end (so not quite backpacking). I would recommend either making a reservation at the campground prior or doing the hike one way.

This is the most beautiful hike I've ever done! Sooo many different views of mountains, water, rock formations, and spectacular nature! We found a secret place to hang out - just ours!! We can't wait to return...

Easy beautiful hike. Today we escaped all the smoke of forest fires. So refreshing. Very alpine.

Amazing views from Sparks Lake. You don't even need to hike to see South Sister looming over the lake. Tons of people on the water and around the lake on a weekend in July. Trail take you around the area and offers multiple views of Sparks Lake, South Sister, and Broken Top. A must do if in the area.

The sun was shining, birds chirping, chipmunks scurrying across the trail. God's amazing glory was all around. Life doesn't get much better than this. Get out and make memories of your own. I posted a picture of my kids holding hands admiring the mountains. Too cute. Paved trails plenty of parking.

This is an easy trail and very family friendly. I personally don't love it here because I'm an avid hiker and this spot tends to be more amateur friendly and busy. In fact, part of the trail is actually paved, which attracts a lot of people who are not very comfortable in the outdoors and are looking for that exact kind of hike. People also seem to be very afraid of dogs out there, both my boyfriend and I have noticed on the paved trail that people seem to be afraid of dogs, even when they are on leashes, harnessed and completely minding their own business. Not my cup of tea. However, Sparks Lake is beautiful (kind of chilly), and a wonderful place for canoeing and kayaking. I would just rather be on the water than hike around the edge here.

This is one of the most picturesque sites in the area - Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top, South Sister ringing the lake. It's a shallow lake, no more than 10' at the deepest, earliest in the season. The section closest to 97 will turn into grasslands by mid-summer. Winds come up in the afternoon, and can sweep along the snow capped mtns making it a bit chilly early in the season. Good camp sites on the lake, if you're interested in spending a night or so. Saw a cougar this last trip, and bears are also around, so be prepared! It's a great way to spend the day.
