A moderate round trip which includes a 700 foot elevation gain. A beautiful hike which takes you through spruce woods carpeted with beautiful wild flowers and delivers you to a place where you are treated to 150 miles north-to-south panoramas of the awe inspiring Oregon Coast. This hike takes place at Cape Perpetua on the St Perpetua Trail behind the visitor center. Start out going down a beautiful trail which offers lush green flora. After a short walk down the trail there is a fork in the trail and you need to follow the St. Perpetua Trail which has you cross over Cape Creek and two paved roads. The first paved road takes you out to the camping area and the second paved road will have road traffic so be aware when crossing. After you cross the two roads you come to the St Perpetua/Whispering Spruce Trail which takes you up a set of switch backs, there are about 11 of them and it is a straight up hike - moderate to difficult- the hike gains 700 feet in elevation. You will be rewarded with wildflower meadows of beautiful Blue camas, red Indian paintbrush and lupine blowing in the wind. On a and clear day when you reach the top you will be treated to a fabulous view at 803 ft - 150 miles of north-to-south coastal panoramas - the beautiful Oregon Coast. Once at the top take the Trail of the Whispering Spruce and you will find the grounds of a former World War II Coast Guard lookout that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1933. From the lookout you will be treated to a view of Cape Foulweather to the north and to the south Cape Blanco. The trail out to the lookout loops back around to the return trail. The walk back to the visitor center is all down hill. While this is a difficult trail on the way up it is well worth the trek, don't give up!

Went there on a sunny November Sunday. Nice trail, but nothing very special about it. Nice hike in the woods, with LOTS of mushrooms on the way. Look for the Amanita Muscaria! Quite steep but I wouldn't say it's very hard. Many people on the trail. We reached the top around 1pm. The view is to the west and south, so the sun was in our eyes. Great view but it would probably be much nicer early in the day, or at sunset. You can also reach the top with a car, which makes it less special for me. I really recommend going DOWN to the beach from the visitors' center to see the tide pools!

Just as advertised! Steep but amazing views! Lotsa roots and rocks, but nothing out of the ordinary for this area. Saw a whale!

Good workout for the legs on the way up and the views cannot be beat. Recommend going in the morning when it's cooler out. Trail is well maintained.

Beautiful, well-maintained trail with the gorgeous view at the top! Perfect for a little cardio hike with the majority being at an incline.

Nice hike to amazing views lots of great hikes from cape Perpetua. Visitor Center is a great stop too. Rangers very familiar with the trails in the area. We had great conditions for the hike. Trail nice and soft. The cape Perpetua trail maps indicate this as a difficult trail but I’d agree with moderate. Would be great for kids.

This is worth the uphill hike. You are rewarded with a spectacular view of the coastline and Pacific ocean! May is a great time to hike as there are wildflowers in bloom all along the trail. We hiked the trail to the giant spruce first. The tree is impressive, plus, it's a good warm up for the St. Perpetua trail. Great way to spend a day. Pack a lunch and enjoy the best seat for a meal at the top!

Beautiful hike up and it’s not super difficult even though the sign at the trailhead says so. Totally worth it because the view is insane. If you want to know more info about the area find Lila at the visitor center because she’s very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of great tips.

Worth every bit of it. Many switchbacks and even though it was wet it wasn't very muddy. views of the Pacific are AMAZING! definitely a moderate hike with huge trees!

Great quick trail. Nice burner on the way up and unforgettable views of the Pacific at the top. The rapid ascent makes this a strong moderate by AT standards, but the distance is short and terrain mostly easygoing. Really packs a lot into a quick hike.

Challenging climb, but gorgeous views at regular intervals on the way up, including an absolutely beautiful view at the top. Do it! The trek up is aerobic, for sure, but the trail is well-marked and mostly covered in pine needles.

We did the Giant Spruce Tree first and glad we did because we were tired after taking the way up R Perpetua Trail. It is quite an incline, but since i’m usually hiking in altitude in Colorado it was nice to be able to at least catch your breath! The view is spectacular and worth the climb.

Started from the Cape Perpetua Visitor's Center. It is challenging in that it is a lot of elevation gain over a relatively short distance (got my heart rate up for sure), but I made it to the top by taking it slow. The shady forest and glimpses of ocean are beautiful along the way and the views from the top are worth it. There's a quick, easy walk to the rock shelter from the top parking lot, and a toilet ;).

The best - jaw dropping view.

I did this trail in May 2018 and it was amazing. Great trail with incredible views!

I enjoy this going down the hill. Up hill can be kinda rough with how steep it is. Check the weather before going as mud can make it harder. I feel this trail is more uneven from rocks and roots on the ground. I dont find it an issue but some may.

this is a nice climb and short - combine it with the Amanda trail for a longer stretch and more elevation. I did that to condition for Yosemite.

Beautiful, moderately traveled trail with many switchbacks up the side of a hill. Spectacular views of the ocean and lots of wildflowers in the Spring. At the top is a parking lot with bathrooms and a shelter overlooking the ocean. Amanda Trail ends up at the same parking lot from the other direction.

Gorgeous look out. Not very muddy in the winter, pretty steep but not too long and a good workout. Beautiful old growth trees.

Great hike! The Trail has Switch backs on the way up and maintained well. Wasn't crowded for a Sunday afternoon. We went on a clear day which allowed us to see down the coast and catch some whale watching at the top. The view makes the hike extremely worth it! Not too challenging as an experienced hiker.

Great short hike. Fairly steep, but amazing views. Would rate higher but you can drive to the top and see the same view, which makes it not as rewarding. I actually went to the top on accident so I hiked down and then back up.

This trail would be incredible if I hadn't driven to the top about a millions times prior to hiking it. The hike is steep and the view at the top is worth it.
