Gate to Rainbow Forest campground was closed so we (and everyone else) parked along main road and hiked in. Entrance to #723 is ALL the way at the back of the CG, behind the outhouses. Stayed on #723, not veering left onto Collawash River Road, but turned around before reaching Riverside campground. Beautiful though I would not consider “easy“ as the trail is rolling with some short, but decent, climbs. Might be a challenge to some. Logged 7.1 miles with 1108 ft ascent and 1135 ft descent (took a few side trials to the river), recorded on Garmin GPS.

The best part of this trail starts at the Rainbow Campground. You can park there, right before the official campsite spots. It’s a small lot, but workable. You then must walk to the outhouses on the other end of the campground where the trail starts on the side of them. It’s not well marked but worth the find. There’s a lot of old growth on the trail and the Oak Grove Fork of the Clackamas River is a nice wild stream. There are many places to stop, sit and picnic. The Geocache featured on Alltrails, I wouldn’t recommend, as you walk off a side trail only to find a makeshift campground that doesn’t look secure. The middle access to the trail is marked by a sign. Don’t bother. It’s just a parking lot. Go all the way to the Riverside Campground, where you’ll be following the Clackamas River proper. Turn around and head back. Easy trail run for me. The elevation changes were minimal, and the trail was soft and cozy. Have fun!!

Trailhead is at Rainbow camp ground by the outhouse. Nice up and down trail by the river.

Nice trail following the river but but still with elevation with up and down. Note that the trailhead is at the mid way - about to miles after the first campground. The total trail is 3.8 from campground to campground.

Very nice ease trail with creek and river access , beach on the middle of the way. We parked before the campground entrance.

Getting to the official parking lot was tricky. This is a trail connecting Rainbow campground to Riverside campground and you CANNOT park in either campground. You have to park roughly 2 miles off the road past Rainbow campground. There’s a hidden parking lot on the right side of the road. The trailhead is clearly marked inside. You enter the trail kind of halfway so you can choose to do the whole thing or just one side of it. The trail is beautiful. It follows the Clackamas river and the elevation goes up and down enough so you just start to really feel it. The trail was well maintained with no trees down. It wasn’t very rocky or rooty. There’s a few spots to get right down to the river and a few spots with views overlooking the river from up high (that elevation gain). Not crowded at all! Great hike.

The trailhead is actually inside a campground and is not marked. There's also not a ton of markers along the trail and many different off shoots. I also didn't find a definitive ending point. Other than some mild confusion, this was a lovely hike along the river.

Still no snow. Drier than Clackamas River Trail #715 right now.
