Usually do this during the summer months with my daughter and our dogs, taking dips along the way. Have backpacked all the way around the Lake few years back.

Great hike when water is up, skip it when the water level is low.

Trail is in the woods with sporadic views of the lake. Not much altitude change and not much excitement either. Saw some deer, geese, woodpeckers and turkey.

Love this spot. Good easy trail and lots of water for the dogs to play in.

Decent trail to break up the boredom of winter, but not the best for scenery or physical challenge. Definitely an easy trail, and despite the trail being poorly marked at times, I think it would be difficult to get too lost. We made this a loop by hiking back to the French Gulch TH on some of the other connecting trails. We hiked on Valentine's Day and passed by several other groups or couples. I caught a nice vista over the lake once or twice, but nothing amazing (given, Southern Oregon and Northern CA trails offer some stiff competition in the "best views" category!).

The Beginning of Payette trail is pretty nice an forresty then it gets more scrubby and on the side of the hill with the lake WAY below. I liked the beginning but not the rest so much. It looked pretty sweet continuing on from Payette TRHD but I had to turn around at that point

Awesome trail following the lakeshore. Beautiful outlooks and numerous spots to jump in the lake to cool off in the hot summer months. Very peaceful. It is one of my favorites for trail running when you dont want intense hills (though there are plenty of hill options to go off on). My dog loves it too...of course she gets to swim a lot!! Very little foot/bike traffic.

This trail starts out at the French Gulch Trail Head and walks along the lake for about a mile. As it heads away from the lake, the path comes to a 4 way intersection that leads off on other trails. Its hard to keep track of the Payette Trail. Its a nice hike for a getting out and doing something but not much as far as views and scenery once you travel away from the lake.
