This popular attraction is an unusually large Sitka spruce aptly named for its unique shape. More than 10 feet at its base, it has no central trunk, uncommon for a spruce. Instead, limbs 3–5 feet thick branch out close to the ground. Several other large Sitka spruce trees are visible from the trails, but none is as unusual as the “Octopus Tree.”

This is short and sweet, but I give 5 stars because this tree is incredible, and the view over the edge is breathtaking. It poured rain on me today, but it was still totally worth it. The waves crashing on the beach below had me feeling all kinds of ways, and the rain was making everything shine! No critters were spotted on this trail, but there was some dinner plate sized mushroom action.

If you want to get up to this area you have to take the highway through Netarts and Oceanside. It is closed coming from the northern portion of the loop. As others have noted, this really is more of a stroll, but this tree is really cool. Took our 7 year old and even he was impressed with this tree. You can add in a short walk down to the lighthouse which we did and the whales were very active which was fun to see.

I wouldn't call this a hike - more like a stroll. However, the Octopus Tree is awesome. The pictures online are an accurate look at the tree, but you still have to see it in person.
