I was disappointed. As far as I can tell, there are no "gems" along the way and not much to look forward to. A lot of work for little payoff. It is, however a good hike for exercise.
Be forewarned, this is primarily a mountain bike trail, which makes it not good for dogs. Too many bikers speeding down the trail.
Regarding the flies, they weren't too bad. They only bothered us when we stopped for more than a couple of minutes.

Great hike. The loop around the mountain is pretty easy. The trail to the top is a bit more heart pumping, but totally worth it. It's kind of hard to find, but there's usually some walking sticks near the entrance. Beautiful views at the top.

Great endurance Hike. Started up Alpine, over to Glade, then to Timberline. Went up to Siloux Hut, then back down. Then ended up on the Mtn to Town Bike trail until it almost hit Alpine again, and jumped over and back down. Still feel it!!
