Good trail unless you take Pacific Rim and then go uphill. Almost a mile of straight elevation change but views are awesome!!

great hike if you don't mind unpaved roads and dust. the view of Mt Hood was amazing and since we did it just after labor day there was no snow on the trail. not an easy trail by any stretch of the imagination for beginners, though.

As another poster mentioned, this is a really dusty trail in the summer. It's also not marked well. We ended up off trail and over to the farther east side of the mountain scrambling our way through parts of Palmer glacier! We made several ravine / creavasse crossings with snow in trail running shoes which is nuts but thank goodness we made it out. We've been hiking for many years and feel comfortable off trail but this was eerie due to the possibility of dangerous rock falls. Gorgeous scenery and the Timberline Lodge is amazing. 3 stars bc the trail is not well marked and I felt like I needed a scouring brush to get the fine volcanic dust out of my pores! lol.

Did this trail on 7th July, and there was still enough snow on the mountain that 2 ski runs were open. The trail itself was fine though - we were wearing hiking boots and there were only a couple of places where we had to cross through the (low-level) snow. It’s quite a dusty trail for the most part, and quick elevation gain, but worth it for the amazing views and sense of achievement. If you’re looking for a place to play in the snow in mid-summer then that’s also a bonus ;-)

We couldn’t go but about a half mile up from the trailhead because there was snow we didn’t expect. It’s May 25, and we were just day tripping, didn’t expect quite that amount of snow. So be prepared with the right shoes! Lots of skiers and snowboarders too so be cognizant of your surroundings.

Late June and the mountain was still great for skiing. We hiked right up the Mountaineer Trail and then over to Silcox Hut and down the Silcox Hut Trail. Watched the US ski team train doing aerials and jumps. Pretty cool. Have seen pictures of this rocky landscape when the snow is gone and think it is nicer with the snow. Think would be more fun skiing it.

Not easy...it's a short climb, but a great workout if you're outta shape!
