Hiked today in the rain and snow. A great day it be outdoors. Saw a few fellow hikers. Very easy trail, hardly noticed much of an elevation.

Very scenic hike. Be sure to hike around the shore of Moraine Lake to see some great panoramic views of Broken Top and South Sister.

4 stars, because of the trail itself & not the destination. I really enjoyed the hike along the water & waterfall I saw, but the lake itself was a little underwhelming given the total distance. I was also there when it was raining & overcast so I didn’t quite get the view most do!

Green Lakes trail is a very nice hike which explains why it can be crowded. Take the Moraine Lake trail about 2 miles up Green Lakes trail. Moraine Lake is another 1.75 miles. You can access the South Sister summit route from there or also loop back down to Devils Lake but. if you do that you will need to hitch a short distance back to your vehicle.

Great trail! Arrived at the trail head at 8:30 am and the parking lot was packed, had to park along the street with about 20 other cars. Most of the people seemed to be going to green lakes, though, because we passed very few people once leaving the green lakes trail. Moraine Lake was beautiful and peaceful, would be a fantastic place to camp with so many trails in the area. Steady incline but nothing too crazy or difficult.

HikingGreat!

The trail up to moraine from the green lakes trail head is great. Very moderate climb, very well maintained, and not super busy. Around noon, there were only a couple groups up at the lake and looked like maybe 2 people camping. Just FYI, trail that goes along the north of the lake is closed. So if you want to connect with the south sister trail, you have to use the southern trail around the lake. Lake is beautiful, a clear blue. Can’t wait to come back and just enjoy the lake

HikingGreat!

Pretty trail with waterfalls on Green Lakes and some interesting rock fields leading to Moraine. Not very crowded on a week day starting at 7am. Definitely the easiest hike to get to Moraine compared to Devil's or Wickiup

Gave up on the ascent because it was too cloudy. Ended up going back down the green lakes trail and running along the road to get back to the car.

BackpackingGreat!

First 2 miles are on the Green Lakes trail (aka Beautiful). Signpost marker on trail splits you off to the left to Moraine- tough to miss. Didn’t have any issue with bugs, but I’d be prepared for then none the less. Definitely worth heading back up the green lake trail after coming down from Moraine for another 1/2 mile (or more) to catch more of the river and mini falls. Plenty of shade while on the Green Lakes trail.

The hike to the lake was beautiful and relaxing (besides the mosquitoes), but the lake at the end was underwhelming.

Beautiful trail. As others have noted, it is heavily trafficked for the first two miles, then we didn’t see anyone until the end of the trail. Good for all experience levels.

Awesome trail! The trail head is shared with green lakes trail and half way the trail to Morraine lake splits. Its highly trafficked but once you split off its virtually no one. the first part of the trail follows a river with multiple waterfalls! Gorgeous and the sound of waterfalls so relaxing. there are a ton of of bugs but so worth it!

Totally doable; hiked it on 6/27 and had no problems with the snow or difficulty staying on trail. Amazing waterfalls on the way up and great views of S Sister and Broken Top at the end. Lots of mosquitos. Moderate packed snow at the top with footsteps that are easy to follow to the lake. Lake is indeed half frozen. Had an awesome time!

Beautiful along the river. Lots of hungry mosquitos. snow in the upper half makes it hard to follow the trail in places. Lake still mostly frozen but still beautiful.

Tried to hike on June 20th. Got about a mile past the trail split from Green Lakes and kept losing the trail due to snow. Ended up turning back. But the trail was absolutely beautiful up until that point. We'd love to go back and try again once the snow is cleared!

DO NOT TRY TO HIKE THIS TIL MID TO LATE JULY!!! We tried to be Trail Blazers and follow gps for the trail as it was still all snowed in. Its hard. Hiked 9 miles in non compact snow. Didn’t get to see the lake either... Beautiful with the river tho! Just wait until there isn’t snow!

Hiking

Hiked Oct 1. Up to 5-6 inches snow on the ground in places, but mostly well beaten down from past hikers. The trail up to the fork is along the creek. It’s a beautiful forest setting with so many waterfalls. Once you turn off Green Lakes (which seems to be a lot more popular) the trail was not as well traveled. Through the forest, up through rocky areas, and finally to the lake. The lake itself isn’t that pretty, but the views of South Sister and Broken Top are top notch. Gradual incline, easy hiking. Even with snow and ice, no areas were so steep we were slipping. Great for dogs. The snow worked in our favor, we had the trail and lake to ourselves.
