Description
Waypoints (0)

Despite the name, this is the most popular route in Smith Rock State Park! You'll get in a challenging climb, ridge views, and a nice walk along the river all in one hike. Depending on when you visit, you may be able to park right at this trailhead, or further down the road along the shoulder. The park gets very busy on weekends with good weather, but there is a lot of parking. Note that there is a $5 parking fee here. This route starts at the main entrance to the park. You'll instantly have incredible views of the Crooked River as it snakes through the park. You'll go downhill, and you'll cross a small footbridge over the river. From here, take a right and start climbing up to the backside of Misery Ridge. You'll likely see rock climbers to your left. This climb is relentless and will be difficult for most hikers. There are steep drop-offs at times, so this route is not good for children or dogs off leash. There are sections with stairs as well. There are views the whole way up. Once at the top, the climbing is over. There is a large rocky area to rest and take some pictures. You'll then continue southwest along Misery Ridge. The views from here are outstanding. There are many opportunities to go off trail and explore the ridge area. Please note that there are many ledges with steep drop-offs so be careful. You'll eventually see Monkey Face, which is an unusual rock column jutting hundreds of feet up in the air. From here, you'll start going down switchbacks, losing all the elevation you gained earlier. After the switchbacks, you'll enjoy a mostly flat walk along the river back to the starting point. This route can technically be done in either direction, but many people choose to go counter-clockwise to get the big climb out of the way first.

AMAZING trail — well maintained and stunning views. When I first arrived, I was worried it was going to be packed with people due to how many cars were there (I struggled to find parking) but once out on the trails it wasn’t bad at all. In my opinion, Misery Ridge isn’t as challenging as the comments make it out to be. Yes, that first mile is a killer and I had to stop to catch my breath a few times, but it goes by super fast and it’s almost all flat/downhill after that. No ice/snow/mud on the trail that I could see. There is loose rock/gravel throughout the trail so I recommend wearing shoes with good traction and ankle support. I will be returning to explore some of the other trails!

The ice was completely gone today. Super sunny and perfect temp. Hood and beyond were visible and the crowds weren’t bad at all. Great day to get out there!

Great trail. Pretty busy here on Sunday. There are smaller parts that are tricky with some ice, slush and mud. Having trax would be helpful but not necessary. Lovely views, not for the faint of heart or those afraid of hikes.

Great trail! Tops of each side were icy. But other than that it was well worth it!

Almost surreal in its beauty, this is a family favorite. We started shortly before 10 am and the south side was about 90% free of ice and snow despite it having snowed about an inch overnight, but traction devices (microspikes/yaktrax) saved the day for the last couple hundred feet. The north/shady side was almost entirely snow. I would not have wanted to do it without traction help. Tough but worth it!

Perfect hike with surreal views of the mountains from the top. Saw ice flakes on trees and on the ground at the top. There is a nice bench near monkey rock where you could sit and enjoy the view. We vlogged the entire hike on our youtube channel. Search “Top 3 winter activities in bend forever hum” to watch our video.

We accidentally did this one instead of the longer version, whoopsy daisy! A real treat for the ol eye blobs, lotsa cool views and rocks to climb on. We encountered a good bit of ice and snow, but nothing we couldn’t manage with some decent boots. I’d recommend crampons and/or poles for anyone attempting this over the next week or two. Did I mention the views?! Absolutely worth the steep hike up to the tippy top!

Good conditions. Snow covered trail with ice in places. Would recommend traction for shoes and poles.

Snow! A good amount of snow on Saturday, though I was able to manage without crampons. I highly recommend at least one hiking pole to help coming down. Beautiful views.

Super nice change of scenery from all the waterfall hikes near Portland. Felt like I wasn’t in Oregon. I did Misery Ridge CCW. It was nice to get the climb out of the way and then cruise back along the river. Surprised there was a lot of people there on a Monday. Got there at 2:30ish to end the hike during sunset.

Stunning . Gorgeous day. Kept thinking the trekking poles that were in my car would have been handy.
