Lone Ranch to Cape Ferrelo Loop is a 1.6 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Brookings, Oregon that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Brilliant views, especially around sunset. The trail back from the cape is washed out though, so I recommend taking the trail towards the cape, once you reach the ocean, take the same trail back out. Additionally, once you park, make sure you take the trail head on the right. The trail on the left will take you towards house rock. Other than the mildly washed out trail, it's an easy 1 mile hike roundtrip with a fantastic view.
The direct route from Lone Ranch Beach back to where you parked (on top of Cape Ferrello) is washed out. WHATEVER you do, do not take the highway back up. I promise, it sounds like a good idea at the time, until a 1/2 mile turns into about 4 as you hike an incredibly steep grade. Please, learn from our stupidity. We hiked out onto the cape and down to the beach - and should have went back up the steep path we took down that is not shown on this route.
Fun, adventurous trail with amazing views! The trail definitely needs a few signs for direction, and it is completely overgrown in some areas. Wear good hiking shoes, long pants, and be prepared for wind. I actually stepped in a hole on the trail that was not visible due to the overgrowth and fell. We also walked up on a couple having sex...so that was odd. They were quite a bit higher than we were, so thankfully we did not actually see much of anything, but it was obvious! Right out in the open, during the day...Not sure if that is typical for this area or not.
Very pretty, and easy hiking. However trail had many unmarked forks and was very confusing to follow. We never made it to the beach and ended up back at the road. Also, the trail head is very difficult to find. You have to park on the highway and look for a tiny concrete sign post just north of the private gated community.
Incredible views! Parts of the recording aren’t really a trail, just a trampled path through meadows
Lone Ranch beach is by far my most favorite beach in Brookings (with the exception being Secret Beach!). It’s waaaaaay less crowded than Harris and by far prettier in my opinion. You still get the sweeping beach with the gorgeous sea stacks. And you have the added plus of the gorgeous hike up to Cape Ferrelo. Make sure to start the hike in the wooded tree area that follows the little stream that empties out onto the beach. Sometimes the entrance to this trail isn’t accessible in early spring when the river is high. But if the river is low enough you can cross it and take the hike. Really great views at the top and a nice spot for lunch on a non-windy sunny day. Love this hike!
Hard to find the start of the trail. We had to cross a small stream and got our feet/shoes soaked. Beautiful view. Easy walk. Kind of overgrown, narrow trail.
Eerie is the word for this hike today. We are in the middle of the Chetco Bar Fire and it's pretty dark and gloomy. The trail is good and you can see by the pics the awesome views from above. You can see the lines in my pics are the sky full of smoke rolling out from the river and meeting blue sky Not much blue anywhere near us..... Hopefully I'll never see our beautiful home area affected like this again.
This is a beautiful coastal hike. There is such an array of folage along the trail that sometimes you feel your in a vineyard, or a jungle. The views of the coast are breathtaking. This trail is often shared with runners and after every couple of miles it intersects with another trail access point from hwy 101. This is a great family hike
