Island in Time (John Day Fossil Beds - Sheep Rock Unit) is a 1.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Kimberly, Oregon that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

A real sense of time.... Some described this trail as 1/2 hr. for 1.4 m out and back. If you want to stop and read signs and simply stare at those cliffs, take at least 45."
Short trail. Really interesting area! Just a few feet into the trail and you step into a prehistoric jurassic time surrounded by fossils and turquoise rocks.
My favorite part of the JODA park! You enter into a canyon of blues as well as observe fossils embedded in the rock! Only moderate because of the length and rocky terrain. A magnificent step into time.
2 hr 15 min from home
Great trail for gaining perspective.... a step back in time for sure. If you take a few moments to read the signs or simply stand and stare at those cliffs, plan on at least 45".
Make sure you stop at the ranger station and talk to the rangers, they are a good source of info and park history. If you are interested in viewing dino digs make sure you ask the rangers about it because they'll be able to tell you which trail allows you to see scientists in action.
