Dog Thief Point [PRIVATE PROPERTY] is a 5.5 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Seaside, Oregon that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and trail running.
Begins a mile west of the Sunset Highway rest area. On the right there is a short dirt road that splits. At this point take a left and park somewhere before the yellow gate that marks the beginning of the privately owned timber lands.
This is not so much a trail as it is just walking on a logging road. The road gate was closed so there wasn’t much traffic near the gate, but we did have multiple vehicles pass us with hunters as we got further on the road. There was some really good views and we did have the place mostly to ourselves.
Great hike. Worried about the “private” sign and gate at the trail head, but it was for motor vehicles, so no issue. Steady 2.5 mile up hill (with a few sharper inclines) to the Point. WELL worth the effort, fantastic views and... silence! We branched off on the way down and using the map hunted for and found a logging track that looped around back to the main trail. We were able to extend the walk to 6.9 miles. Really enjoyed it!
