Tips

High-altitude single-track around and through the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Newberry is an active volcano, meaning the last eruption was some time in the last couple thousand years. Some of the cool stuff includes cinder cones, lava flows, and a huge obsidian (volcanic glass) flow. One of the "signature" mountain bike trips in Central Oregon, this ride runs around and through the caldera comprising the main part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The ride is physically challenging but not highly technical. The route is an easy day trip from Bend. There are multiple camping options nearby. Great views of the Cascades and surrounding desert await!

Bring plenty of water. There's none on the trail. Warm clothing layers are strongly recommended, even in summer. There are general stores at the lakeside resorts on Paulina and East Lake.

First 2 miles is pretty dang steep on a bike, but I just plowed through what I could manage and hike my bike the rest of the way. I cut the trail short jetting down the road by the rv park near East Lake and road the road back. Beautiful!

A great ride. Next time I’ll do the uphill slog.

We ride the whole rim and it’s a grind with some pumice-y parts of the trail that once took me down. Not very technical over all, but a grind in places, one in particular is just before a fabulous view! Love that you can see where you’ve been, looking back across the rim. “Hey we were just there!” Backside at dusk is loaded with mosquitoes, at least at some points of the summer.

HikingBugsGreat!

As a hiking trail, there are some nice views as already documented but be aware that they are few and far between. All of this trail is deceptively at high elevation, in fact the trail-head, the lowest section, is well over 6,000 feet. Mountain bikers are more common than hikers, in fact, 20.6 miles traveled and I did not encounter a single person. Due the distance, the elevation, this hike is primarily a great conditioning hike.

Gorgeous views, great trail conditions, and very flexible in that you can setup camp pretty much anywhere along the trail. We did it in 2 days, 1 night with some light snow throughout the first day but it was well worth it for the views. And the forest looks incredible with some light frost covering it!

Good conditioning hike but not much to look at til you get to the top. Although the trail is in good condition the distant felt a bit off so as others had mentioned I thought I missed the actual view point as the trail starts to descend around the 2.9 mark.

Gorgeous views. High elevation for some of it, which can be an issue with thunderstorms or smoke. Very lightly trafficked, and interesting ecology/wildflowers. Highly recommend.
