Carroll Rim Trail is a 1.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Mitchell, Oregon that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
The whole area of the painted hills is absolutely beautiful. But this is my favorite of the five touristy trails available for hiking. It's a decent hike and a good, quick workout. It also feels more like a hike than just a quick walk with views. Steeper grade and narrower trail make it relatively less trafficked. The views are gorgeous at the top as well as along the way. If it's wet and muddy out, the trail can be really slippery and dangerous. Today, however, it was in great condition and the hike was awesome.
Great trek to the top.The views are amazing. It’s 3/4 of a mile up. Not a hike but not to be missed either. If your not use to the elevation it would be considered a hike. Very narrow. I wouldn’t say kid friendly as there’s shelf rock and a cliff. Very windy. Beautiful
Painted Hills is an awesome landmark because you can see millions of years revealed in the different colored layers of the mountain. Take the Carroll Rim Trail for a viewpoint of the hills, but there’s NO shade so if the temps are hot, bring lots of water. I had to spray my dog with water the whole way so he could stay cool and hydrated. If you don’t want to hike, there’s a parking lot where you can get much closer to the hills without having to walk very much. The time of season you visit will determine how many different colors you will see. Since we visited in the summer, the palette wasn’t as colorful, but it was still cool to see.
