Road 27, which turns into Zig Zag Mtn road, is pretty rough and would recommend a high clearance vehicle. There’s a couple really muddy parts so 4x4 helps too. Took about 40 minutes to get up the mountain to the trailhead. There was only one other truck at the top. The trail head for Burnt Lake starts at the back of the parking lot, there isn’t really a sign. And the free permit station is about 1/5 mile up the trail. The trail starts really wide but gets narrow and overgrown. It’s all very green! A couple switchbacks but it’s mostly a gradual climb to the top of the ridge that meets Zig Zag trail. Great view of Mt Hood on the Ridge! Then a windy/steep decent to burnt lake. It was pretty crowded and we ended up pitching out tent in a day use area since all the camping sites were full. Lots of mosquitos! And seems like good fishing. Second day we hiked to Cast Lake. Less people and less mosquitos. Had fun watching the crawdads in the Lake. Third day we took the Devil’s Tie trail but since it was downhill it wasn’t bad, and then burnt Lake trail back to the truck.
