Broken Top is a beginner level alpine rock climb. The Northwest ridge is the easiest route. It is a ~8-10 hour day over 13 miles and +3,700' elevation gain. The climb is 90% hiking then scrambling, next a 12' ledge rock climb and exposed traverse to the summit. Ability to belay / rappel is recommended for the brief but exposed rock climb and descent.

Definitely not a hike for anyone without proper mountain climbing experience. Getting to the actual summit requires a bit of skill. We did a sunset hike, and climbed back down in the dark with headlamps, ran into two cougars at the base of the mountain. 8-26-19

great weather and great climb. I would suggest a rope for a little step near the top

Beautiful day, beautiful climb! Mosquitoes still out below the tree line but not too bad if you keep moving. Lots of loose rock/scree during the ridge scrambled but manageable without gaiters, though next time I would swap my boots for trail shoes and low gaiters as there was no real need for climbing boots. We roped up for the class 5 section. If you don’t have much rock climbing experience I would definitely recommend roping in, however if you are a seasoned rock climber it is doable without roping. There are some alternative routes without the climb that we saw others take that looked viable. Summit views were more than worth the climb. FYI we did some off trailing on the decent to play in the snow, so don’t follow my recording path.

awesome trail with great views of all the surrounding mountains and lakes. there were mosquitos before you get to broken top. beautiful butterflies were flying all over the place which gave it a even more peaceful atmosphere. the trail can be narrow and Rocky at certain points requiring some scrambling.

the ridge after the lake is loose and exposed, but at no point did it feel dangerous. the end scramble has 1 5.3ish move (could be harder going downhill for the uninitiated) that's not terribly exposed, and is otherwise class 3 terrain. fun scrambling. excellent views of the cascades and tam ridge from the summit.

Awesome trail. Climbed on 7/13. Absolutely gorgeous views and great weather. Lots of mosquitoes down below and at Green Lakes, but the California Tortoiseshell butterflies were migrating en masse which is a sight to behold! Expect thousands of butterflies for a while, with more always near the peaks and on warm days. Only patches of snow left on the trail and a few slightly muddy spots. Green Lakes thawed completely last week. I would have done this trail in my trail runners, but didn’t know the conditions so I brought waterproof boots, micro spikes, and gaiters. Didn’t need any of that. I did use my poles which were handy, but near the top it was hand-to-rock for most of it. Didn’t make the true summit as that 12’ rock face at the top wasn’t worth the risk for our group without climbing gear, but adequately prepared climbers and the foolhardy easily made it. Be sure to take the correct off shoot trail (unmarked that I saw) between where the first two lakes are and not the Broken Top loop trail around the mountain.
