This is a nice little hike not too far from town. There are great views from the top as well as along the way up/down. The trail currently has some snow and ice covering a few sections, mostly on the north side of the butte.
There are a few paths up, not just the main trail. But unless you want to go straight up, stick to the trail on AllTrails. Going straight up was fun but a lil icy
Really great views at the top. There’s a few other small trails other than the main trail - they all get you to the top but the main trail is definitely less strenuous.
Great hike out in Deschutes Woods to have a 360 view of all the mountains. Typically way less traveled than Pilot or Lava Butte, with a nice meandering trail up to a big open area on top for a picnic or sunset. I prefer doing this trail than any other butte for the solitude. Easy also to distance on the trail for covid purposes, keep in mind no shade in the summer!
