Wow! Difficult start to a hike: two thousand feet gain on switch backs to start was an challenging way to start a 11 mile hike. Great view of Hood at the top of that 2 mile trek up. After that you're mostly in the trees. The descent down to the lake was gradual with several creek crossings. Lake was nice and a great spot to refuel and relax. The final descent was a little tough on the legs. Only saw two people on the trail the the entire day. Challenging hike but I felt fine in the morning.

Trail itself was very secluded, but lots of people around the lake owing to the nearby campground. Lots of trees down across the trail, so climbing over/around is necessary. Several creek crossings but low flow and stepping stones made them easy.

Once you get past 2,000ish feet elevation change in the first 2 miles, the trail has amazing views of Mt. Hood & Mt. Adams and it levels off for a bit. I did not make it down to the lake, as I did not have another 1,000+ feet elevation change in me, but my husband did and he said it was lovely!

Great place to go for a day trip. Campsites are limited during warm weather, but the drive up is beautiful!
