Washita Battlefield Trail is a 1.4 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Cheyenne, Oklahoma that features a river and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible year-round.
My favorite trail I’ve hiked so far. If you are in the area definitely walk this easy trail (half paved and half dirt path.) Make sure and stop at the visitor center and watch the 20 minute video (well done). This will give you a great background for this tragic event in history. You can buy the guide book which narrates each of the 15 historical spots clearly marked along the trail ($2.00) or you can call in for free at each spot. This helps understanding the site quite a bit. Once again do this trail if you can.
Very well marked trail through the battlefield, with audio aids very so often. We were there alone the day we went and it was wonderful. Felt very much like sacred ground, and we did our very best to be respectful of such. There is a museum close by, which we unfortunately didn’t make it time to visit, but there is a very short little trail next to the museum with some cool info on local plants/healing herbs and a sod house. 10/10 would go again.
Short, fairly flat double loop through 1868 Cheyenne village and battle site. Trail partially paved with concrete. Excellent interpretive guide describes the battle and the village. A good way to spend an hour or so while learning some (rather saddening) American history.
This is a nice trail. They are working on paving it and have about half of it done.
