Trail is great. It was a bit more of a challenge due to the snow still on the ground. I was a little disappointed that I saw almost no wildlife during the hike.
I’ve hiked numerous trails. Some incredibly rugged ones. This was the rockiest trail I have ever hiked. It took 4 hours out and back.
I hiked this as part of a loop with the Ouachita National Recreation Trail and FR 6010. Descending FR 6010, the Chocktaw National Trail (which makes up this route) crosses approximately 2.5 miles from the Ouachita Trail. The initial port of the CNT is not included in this route. However, if you make the loop I describe, note that the CNT splits into an ATV route and a hiker route shortly before this route starts. I made the mistake of looping back on myself up the ATV route instead of passing over a stream to continue on the CNT... The rest of the trail goes through bucolic scenery although there are no particularly good views. The trail gets more use from ATVs than hikers and consequently muddy and noisy.
This was a great hike. I do feel that the description needs to be modified though. I started the recording at the edge of the parking lot and the in and out was 8.8 miles. A large part of the trail is covered with loose rocks about the size of baseballs. Even though it was tougher than we expected, we had a great time. The streams we crossed were beautiful and the signs of wildlife was very cool. This is truly a beautiful Rea and am looking forward to more trails.
This trail is longer than it says it’s closer to 8.5 miles. Pretty rocky. More for UTV and horseback riding.
It is longer than the 7.8 miles it says. We started too late to make it all the way in and back today. We will try again another day.
