“How is it possible a round trip on the same trail can be uphill both ways?” Pioneer outdoorsman and explorer, Mike W. Beautiful weather hiking. It’s long with limited water so recommend ample supply. I went through 100oz by about mile 15. Ascent at start and 1/2 way point are challenging but not out of reach for most hikers. Very limited wildlife except for stick bugs making babies. Change in light throughout hike made return leg seem entirely sdifferent. 8.5 hours to complete with about 45 mins of rest throughout. Two weeks earlier would have been spectacular with the foliage changing.
We just did the 1 1/2 mi out and back. The part Bill said was tough AND it Was! we enjoyed the terrain and scenery on a short hike that was part of a travel day on our way to Winding Stairs. It was windy, cloudy and cool. Still very lovely scenery and a nice way to get our heart rates up on what otherwise would have been a zero day.
I had an awesome day today. I hiked 8 miles of the Ouachita Trail from Talimena State Park to Deadmans Gap. I then backtracked and took the Bohannon trail to the Chickasaw Nation Trail which I followed back to Talimena State Park. I was on trail for 20 miles and had an elevation change of 2,864 feet. I completed the last 3.5 miles in the dark with light rain. The Ouachita Trail was in great shape and well marked. The Bohannon and Chickasaw Nation Trails will test your navigation skills. The short walk off trail to Panorama Vista is a must, the view should not be missed.
