This 268-acre preserve protects one of the most spectacular dolomite and limestone gorges in the state. Registered as a National Natural Landmark in 1968, Clifton Gorge encompasses a 2-mile stretch of the Little Miami State and National Scenic River, just east of John Bryan State Park. Geologically, it is an outstanding example of interglacial and post-glacial canyon cutting. At one point, the river funnels through a deep, narrow channel, which was apparently formed by the enlarging and connecting of a series of potholes in the resistant Silurian dolomite bedrock. In other sections of the gorge, cliff overhangs have broken off forming massive slump blocks scattered along the valley floor. The shaded, north-facing slopes provide a cool, moist environment for northern species including hemlock, red baneberry, Canada yew, arbor-vitae and mountain maple. This is one of the most spectacular sites in the state for viewing spring wildflowers including the rare snow trillium.

Easy little hike, awesome scenery especially with the fall colors and after a rain, you can do the South Gorge trail but 1 of the bridges is closed so it's not a loop, just take the Rim Trail instead to create the loop.

Takes about 1.2 hours at fast pace to complete loop. Upper trail is dry and flat. Lower trail is rocky, muddy, and moderate. Good overall for a fast walk or trail run.

Beautiful views, lots of scenic water falls and river views. From the top of the gorge you can see and hear the river and wildlife. We did a 6.5 mile hike. Climbing out of the gorge was the most challenging. Well worth the beautiful views of Mother Nature at her best.

This is the John Bryan State Park gorge trail that follows the Little Miami river. I do this trail every year. The trail descends stairs down into the gorge and is flanked by gorge walls on either side of the river. The last time that I was there the western bridge was out. If so, walk along the north side of the river to the western bridge and then up to the rim trail to return to your starting point. If you do this trail, make sure that you continue east for a half mile along the Clifton Gorge trail, too. Very picturesque.

muddy, but very nice trail

The trail itself is very moderate in regards to level of difficulty. However, being a first timer to the Clifton Gorge area, We found the trail system a bit confusing. Many of the trails would zig & zag often times without any transitional markings to inform the hiker of their whereabouts. Although, this shouldn't be a deterrent for anyone. The trails are nice, the scenery is beautiful and regardless of being confused at times. You won't be disappointed.

Poorly marked trails with little variety. Not much to look at.

Nice and quiet trails. Get there early.

The John L. Rich trail was absolutely breathtaking! This was our first hiking trip since we've moved here from California in Jan 2015, and the scenery was amazing and bi-passed what we expected. We can't wait to hike the extended 4 mile trail next.

Beautiful hike, We started at the far parking lot in Clifton and did the full hike around the rim and through Clifton Gorge. This was probably the most scenic part of the hike, The western bridge over the river was closed so we did the Stage Coach Trail and then up onto the Northern Rim Trail for a total of about 6 miles. We'll come back and do South Gorge another day. Overall I would rate the route as easy with just a couple mildly strenuous hill climbs. Lots of amazing views with cascades, pools and the occasional small waterfall.

Directions are accurate to site. There are three parking areas. Park in one closest to Clifton township along SR343. The red trail map starts at the nature center while the trail actually begins close to town along SR343. Thats where you peer down into the gorge from the rim. Very nice views. At nature center go down the steps into the gorge. Good out and back walk in the Gorge. Or, where the preserve meets John Bryan State Park you can take a loop trail further (as shown on the map). At the time I hiked the South Gorge trail portion of the loop was closed for repair. Pitt-Cinn trail was open. Very nice day. Recommend eating at Clifton Mill for breakfast before hike or a meal after. Its very nice old mill with waterfall and covered bridge. See Instagram: hikingandexploring for more pictures of this hike.

I love Clifton Gorge! It is a beautiful hike and one of my favorite places to hike. Two things to note: The second footage is closed so you can't actually the loop. It is under maintenance with no estimate to when it will be done. Second, I recommend that you start at the entrance off of Jackson St. You get to see the more narrow portion of the gorge with the waterfall which is the best part in my opinion.

Fun hike with kids. On the portions down in the gorge, there are lots of places for the kids to explore & climb .

The North Rim and South Gorge (not "George") trails make for a nice hike up and down the Little Miami River in John Bryan State Park. Unfortunately, the AllTrails map for this shows the wrong entrance. The entrance to John Bryan is on SR 370, not SR 343.

If you go to the SR 343 entrance, you are entering Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve. Clifton Gorge does connect with John Bryan and can make for a nice extended hike. Be warned that Clifton Gorge does not allow pets. John Bryan, though, is a great place to walk a dog

Good hike, the views were really beautiful, also got to see many animals along the trail.

Great day hike, if you have the time. It's only about an hour drive away from Columbus which makes it very convenient. Crowds are generally not too bad either.

This is a beautiful hike. The trails are well worn in John Bryan, but the neighboring Glen Helen are much smaller and difficult to navigate. The border between the two properties are not well marked, so I ended up hiking farther than expected. Still, the Little Miami provides a nice view.

Great hike! The scenery is amazing! Definitely one of the best hikes in Ohio.

A really nice trail that has amazing cliff views, fresh waterfalls, and rushing whitewater that will excite even the most experienced hikers. May not stand up to parks of the West, but one of the best trails in southeast Ohio.
