Maumee Bay Boardwalk Trail is a 2.2 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Oregon, Ohio that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching.
Accessibility: The grade of this trail is gentle (estimated to range from 0-3%). The wooden boardwalk is estimated to range from 4-7 feet wide with some pull-off locations for passing and it has edge barriers. There are designated ADA-compliant car parking spaces at the Nature Center with striped access aisles.
Chilly but beautiful spring day. We saw plenty of wildlife, however, including deer, muskrat, turtles, bullfrogs and fish.
Boardwalk was well maintained. Lots of birds, and a grouping of White Tail. Could hear Geese over the whole trail. Easy walk!
It was mid-February, cold, and snowy but we really enjoyed the walk. The boardwalk is very well constructed and is marked well so you always know what direction you’re headed. It took us straight from our cabin right up to the lake, beautiful view and lots of deer.
Very interesting trail on the boardwalk. We went on a cool fall day and enjoyed the views of the wetlands.
We are staying at The Lodge. The boardwalk is open, and we walked the entire length of it yesterday. I am not sure what to think of the one star reviews. We thought it was wonderful. The water is quite pretty with the green algae. Yes, the wood is not in the best shape. But it's still strong.
CLOSED!! Maumee Bay State Park has some great things, but the trail (at this time) is not one of them. It was closed, but it’s in bad shape. The water is completely green/algae is terrible. I really wish we would’ve known or seen the previous review. We drove 1.5 hours specifically to go on this boardwalk. I have no idea when they’ll reopen it, but I don’t see that happening for a long time.
This is the best trail in the park. 2 loops, short & long. They're connected to each other. Boardwalk all the way, so wheelchair & stroller friendly. Kids would get a kick out of this trail. Lots of wildlife sightings. We saw white tail deer, a muskrat, many snakes & lots of different birds. An observation tower lets you peek at Lake Erie, but the focus is on the marsh. We loved it!
Hottest part of the day made the North loop portion in exposed Marshland pretty muggy but rest of trail was very good. Saw two Great Blue Herons which made the day specia!
Nice walk. Not your typical walk through the woods. Very kids friendly. A nice little trail if you're in the area.
Amazingly long boardwalk through wide variety of wetland areas. Boardwalk is somewhat dated and will need some major repairs in a few years, but it was structurally sound on my visit. Tall vegetation somewhat obstructs wildlife/bird viewing. Observation platform allows you to see Lake Erie a few hundred feet away. Overall, one of the best wetland hikes in the Midwest.
A nice trail through the eastern portion of Maumee Bay State Park. The boardwalk is well-maintained and passes through marshes and moist woods. Birds of varying varieties, deer and wildflowers are almost always present during warmer months. Turtles and sometimes snakes can be seen near the nature center at the trailhead, which has good displays of local wildlife within. But for the view from one observation tower, the lake is generally not visible. There are several loops which can be used to customize the distance to your preferences.
The Black Swamp provides a variety of changing scenery depending on the season, and the raised wooden boardwalk allows for easy accessibility to these sights. It is a great short trip for greenhorns and seasoned hikers. Bountiful wildlife! In one trip I spotted countless warblers, wrens, chickadees, catbirds, cardinals, 6 deer, and a red shouldered hawk.
