don't come at this trail from the west side of yellow gap road during the winter unless you're prepared to walk an extra 3 miles. they close the road. otherwise, it's a great hike. beautiful views of sone small creek falls and the further up you get some good views of the inn and parkway. coming back though, make sure to have your GPS ready because it's really easy to miss your turn and you end up on pilot rock trail.

Thompson is a beautiful trail. The lower section is easy, but as soon as the trail turns to the right it tilts up pretty good and the going gets much tougher. You can make a nice loop out of it by going up Thompson and then turn right and go back down hill on Pilot Rock trail

My husband and I always took this trail head to get deep into the forest for a days hunting trip. Never knew it was a real trail.
