Went out and back to check out the trail for a family hike. Lots of roots. Mostly shaded trail. Would definantly recommend.

We did part of this as an out and back from Price to Cold Pond, 8 miles rt. Loved it. Lots of scenery changes and most was in shade.

Beautiful trail, lots of roots and rocks. Rough Ridge was overcrowded, narrow, and slick but the views were gorgeous. It rained a few times, but the trail was well-sheltered so we didn't get too wet. Someone needs to accurately clock the mileage, though. This app say 11.8 miles, the signage at the trailhead says 13 miles, and my tracker read 14.25 miles. Meadows at the end were filled with wildflowers. Can do it in section hikes, if desired.

I hiked this trail instead, since Daniel Boone scout trail was closed due to Covid-19. I u-turned at rough ridge parking lot. Tanawha trail goes parallel to Blueridge parkway so usually I can hear noises from cars, that is why I never liked it. However since Parkway was closed, there was no cars and very quiet and could hear the birds chirping. I saw lot of wild flowers blooming and it was wonderful experience!

Started this in the middle by the trailhead at Holloway Mountain Rd. Love the cows, watch the poop. Not difficult in the section I went through.

Four stars simply because there are so many roots I felt like I was walking on shaky stairs the whole hike! Lots of down trees to go over and under and in between. All in all though it was a nice quiet hike with some great views in the first few miles! One can see so many types of terrain and landscape on this hike! Pretty cool!

We did a section of this trail as part of our Grandfather Mountain Hike. We started at Julian Price Memorial Park and took the Boone Fork to the Tawanha trail all the way til the Daniel Boone Scout, where we left Tawanha to go towards Grandfather Mountain. You can see part of the Tawanha here: https://youtu.be/qcxxsqqEOvA It is a pretty flat and moderate trail for the section we did. It did have some hills and went through a farm-like area which was cool! Watch out for cow pies!

Nice trail that you can run in most sections. Convenient that you can pop back on to BRP and circle back to car easily. Viaduct section is technical and slow going and also has more people on it.

Can either be a long or shorter hike, it's up to you. Connects with many other trails on Grandfather Mtn. Very peaceful and beautiful, by no means a super strenuous hike though. has some 'rooty' spots here and there

We did only a portion of the trail from Holloway Road to Boone Fork Parking. One way about 3.5 miles. Beautiful and well marked.. lots of streams and rock outcroppings. Wonderful!

First to Review

The Tanawa trail is over 13 miles long, and contained in a separate listing, but this trail goes around Cold Prong Pond (according to the "start symbol" on the map. This trail is a good access trail for the Tanawa / MST, and loops around a pond that is always dry. I hiked it, and there is no pond anymore- its a dry grassland. The Actual Tanawa trail is very nice, with rolling meadows, and great views of Grandfather mountain and Wilson Creek Valley.
