Sunrise and Jefferson Overlook is a 2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near West Jefferson, North Carolina that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

January 31, 2021January 9, 2021December 21, 2020December 19, 2020Park road closed at first overlook due to ice so I walked up the road and then did the short summit trail to the top.
December 11, 2020November 1, 2020I completed the Mountain Ridge Trail (including Sunrise, Sunset and Jefferson Overlooks), along with the Summit, Rhododendron and Lost Province Trails, for a very nice 6.25 mile hike. There are lots of wonderful views of the surrounding area and mountains.
October 18, 2020Very enjoyable trail. Disappointed that we hiked it after peak time for the leaves, but still a fun hike that was challenging for me, but not too much. The views were great. I will say I expected more of a plateau at the top from other reviews I had read. We began at sunrise overlook. There were a ton of leaves, so we had to keep our eyes open for roots and rocks. I’d do it again for sure.
September 25, 2020Hiked this in the pouring rain with our three grade school kids. Even though we couldn’t see anything at the outlooks, the plant life was beautiful.

August 28, 2020June 20, 2020Great, fairly easy hike. I went this morning and finished in about 45 minutes. It was a little muddy due to all the rain but not bad at all. The view from both overlooks is beautiful!
March 31, 2020didnt really hike to this we came up with the car and parked and went out to the ridge to capture some sunset photos. amazing place to hang out till sunset. it was a bit cold on that Saturday but truly worth the wait to capture a glowing sunset in the mountains

First to ReviewFrom the park office take the mtn ridge trail up to the top. Take the spur to sunset overlook either on the way up or the way back down. Then walk the rest of the trails. Great little picnic area. You can also just drive to the top to walk the trails.
