This is a well-maintained trail — mostly AT — that begins with conifers and pretty stunning views and ends with deciduous forest and limited views, although it runs across the ridge tops most of the way. It is also steep and rocky though most of it, but there is surely a lot to look at in terms of mossy forest floors and wildflowers — even in late summer. It is a fun and challenging hike which I will definitely do again!

Siler's Bald itself is overgrown--there are no views from the "bald" and I daresay "bald" is now a misnomer. The best views along this section of the AT are visible during the descent from Clingman's Dome. After about 2 miles from Clingman's, you'll experience pretty typical AT "green tunnel" scenery until Silers if you're hiking when there's foliage. Overall, kind of a disappointing hike but I do love the entire Smokies section of the AT, so I still think it's worthwhile if you enjoy more solitude than some of the more popular trails in the Newfound Gap/Clingman's Dome area. Another downside is that when done as an out-and-back, the ascent is during the second half of the hike--though overall I'd say the elevation gain is mostly moderate.

Not too strenuous there or back. The trail becomes a little shrouded at times but nothing too bad. The way down the first mountain is gorgeous with great views. The shelter at the bottom is a cool place to stop at and if you go during summer there are some very pretty flowers. After the shelter there aren’t really any great views to see, but still a couple minor ones. The bald is very overgrown and there is little to no view once you arrive, but there is another shelter a little was down the other side to stop for a little rest. Overall not the best hike I’ve been on but not the worst at all.

Did this along with a bigger loop. I'd say I usually love ridge walking, but this isn't one of them. I think going south instead of west gives you better view points.

First couple of miles featured incredible views. The clouds set in (along with the rain) by the time I made it to Siler's Bald. The return trip was a little strenuous climbing back up toward Clingman's Dome. The Siler's Bald AT shelter made for a good place to eat lunch. Any time you hike from the Dome parking area or Newfound Gap plan on getting an early start.

Depending where you start. Main trailhead is in Cherokee NC and goes for 20 miles. Peak is usually busy with a lot of people during the weekends. Trail is well maintained overall for a busy trail such as this. Looking forward to the spring to climb again.

There is no view from Silers Bald in fall 2016 due to bushes. All the comments in guide books regarding an open bald are obsolete. The only reward is to get a photo of the USGS brass BM.

Sorry but not much to see along the way and the bald is grown over and provides no views. It is a challenging hike for the average day hiker. We did see a bear while eating lunch at siler's bald shelter. We also met some thru hikers and trail maintenance crew folks that provided entertaining conversations. Once is enough for this one.

Siler Bald is near Franklin, NC (in the Nantahala National Forest) Silers Bald is near Cherokee, NC (in Great Smoky Mountain National Park) Both are located on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina - so that adds to the confusion - and both are awesome. The photo gallery on this page mixes photos from both hikes which are in entirely different places. The data in the overview is for Silers Bald - in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park

We did this hike from Clingmans Dome. There was a lot of up and down but there were many great views along the way. When we reached the Bald it was pretty over grown as it is not maintained any longer and the forest is reclaiming the area. Overall it was still a great hike. Eric and Karen
