I would classify this trail as heavily used. At times you are literally walking in a ditch do to trail erosion. That said the creek is beautiful and there are some great views. And, a first for me, I came upon a bride and groom in full regalia who had just completed their ceremony.

Excellent backpacking trail. It gets muddy and rocky at times, but otherwise great. The trail crosses through a grassy meadow which was very pretty. We hiked Sam’s Knob in the afternoon the next day which was a great view, but my favorite view was Black Balsam Knob. Beautiful view with mountains visible on both sides of the trail at times. There are several campsites along Flat Laurel Creek. It did get fairly cold, so I recommend bringing warm clothing. Also bring a bear canister.

Loved this loop!! Rocky and a bit muddy hiking seemingly on a creek bed. Great shade & creek crossings, at the summit pretty 360 degree views. Our 7 & 9 year old did this with minimal complaining.

Trail was well traveled until we got to the trail to go down to flat Laurel creek. The trail was muddy and we were following small stream all the way to a creek. Great hike.

Great trail. Did it right at peak leaf change in late October. Great conditions. Camped off Flat Laurel Creek, there is a variety of campsites. Did Sam's Knob in the morning on a Tuesday, no people. All in all spectacular, had an encounter with a large male black bear. Be cautious and prepared

I'm from the blue ridge mountains(tuckasegee) . I'm hiking the area constantly.. Sam's knob area.. has become a go to.. this trail is amazing with alot to see. it's not difficult at all.. the only gripe I have is the amount of people who traffic here.. some days you can not even get into the area to hike. i like to get away from people unfortunately you'll have to deal with that here along work loud barking dogs.. definitely takes away from the peacefulness.

Did the loop clockwise. First section down was wet and muddy. High weeds not much view. Opens into a field. Not much color in the trees yet even though mid October. Steep rocky climb to sams knob.

Flat Laurel Creek is an easy hike with two waterfalls. Wildcat falls is really pretty with a very interesting bridge. Getting onto the Sam Knob trail was a little tricky. Not well marked and muddy but it didn't pose much of a problem since my GPS kept me on track. The hike up Sams Knob is work but well worth it.

Beautiful trail on the way up to the summit. Only saw a few trail markers the entire time and had to ask where the trailhead was when we began. Very rocky and wet on the Laurel Creek side. Overall good hike for families.

Our end spot is a great spot to set up camp! Right by the creek and just off the trail.

We hiked this clockwise, starting out on Flat Laurel Creek Trail first. Trail was very wet and muddy, due to rains during the week. It was cold overnight, so we saw traces of snow and black ice on some of the rocks. Many parts of Flat Laurel Creek Trail side were trickling water with a lot of rock-hopping. Adding this stretch and making it a loop is a great option instead of just doing the up-and-back of the regular Sam Knob Trail. I actually got 4.7+ miles on my watch, and we did the hike exactly as it shows here. The top of Sam Know affords some of the very best 360 degree panoramic views of the Shining Rock Wilderness anywhere. Black Balsam is very similar, but I have always loved the view on top of Sam Knob.

Had a blast! Getting a 13.5 year old geriatric 65 LB Catahoula to the top of Sam’s Knob was a bit more adventure than I anticipated, but well worth the view at the top! The meadows reminded me of Rocky Mountain National Park, beautiful scenery & great day for a hike!
