Pleasant place to camp! Just stayed a night, and it was pouring rain. But still a fun adventure! The bathrooms facilities, which obviously are not going to be immaculate, but the amount of spiders was unparalleled. I have camped many a time and it was just, ya, not enjoyable. But otherwise the campgrounds were nice, especially getting a spot close to the lake. Nice trail around the lake as well!
This is indeed a nice campground, with lots of trails and the MST running by it. The lake is nice; the only one that allows boating on parkway lands. The campground is generally open during the summer and fall months. There is a loop on the lake side, and 5 loops on the Tanawa side. Other facilities include a picnic area, boat rentals, and ranger station. No hookups are available right now; that is why this campground is only 3 stars.
Very nice state park. If you are lucky you can camp on the lake side of the park but if not, across the road in the LARGE camp ground is very nice too. Last time I camped there I saw deer just grazing in the grassy areas. It sits right on the Blue Ridge Parkway and you can make reservations on reserve.gov.
