Quickest way up the mountain on the trails, the Mountain Trail is gradually sloping and a good warmup, then hit Grindstone until you have a choice, either up the steps on Ledge Spring or up the smooth Grindstone trail. Just remember it's either steps or smooth coming back down. The trails on top are easy. Overall a nice hike with lots of variety.

Well marked routes. Lots of babbling streams (possibly only due to heavy rains the week prior) and rock formations to keep it interesting along the wooded climb.

Started this trail around 7:30 AM May 23, 2020. Parked at the park visitor center parking lot before starting on Grindstone Trail. The trail is easily identifiable due to beaten path, as well as blue triangles every 50-100 yds pinned to trees. The conditions were somewhat muddy due to the previous weeks amount of rainfall, but still hike-able. There are route maps posted along the trails as well as the summit parking lot and Visitor Center Parking log. The trail has some decent hill climbs of different grade that do not utilize switch backs and is a straight up/down trail. State Park authorities started closing entrance gate at around 11:30-12:00 A.M. but am not sure what the reason was.

Closed completely - not even open on weekdays now.

Park rangers had the front gates to the park closed. They said the park will be open on weekdays, but is closed on weekends due to the high volume of guests and the fear of them spreading Corona virus.

Awesome hike! The trail has changed from what AT map shows toward the top due to trail construction. Very well blazed park with an awesome reward at the end.

Part of the trail was confusing and possibly blocked off near the parking lot. The ledges portion of the trail was very nice, lots of rock climbers. View at the end was great!

For a hike in February it was great.

I felt that the roads that intersected this hike was a huge detraction. There were so many people at the top, and the fact that you can just drive to the top made it feel like less of a victory. I was also disappointed that I couldn’t climb to the peak of Pilot Mountain. The walk around the base was nice though.

A steeper hike, but very rewarding!!! Lots to view on the way up! Very neat rock formations on the way up! Also good overlooks!

good hike, not too challenging and easy enough to follow. didn't really like how at the peak you can just park there and there were tons of kids everywhere. the fact that you could just drive up to the top and walk a half a mile kinda ruined the vibe. something about only hiking the whole trail to see the peak is special. I probably won't come back. views were great and a few streams so my dog could drink water.

Trail was very well maintained, saw a park ranger in the visitor center and he was ready for any and all questions about the park. Beautiful hike, loved seeing people out rock climbing.

1/20/20 Solid trail. It has some icy parts but manageable. A lot of traffic. Trail is well marked.

The upper half of the Ledge Spring trail from the parking lot to the switchback has been rerouted for trail maintenance. It now passes through the picnic area and continues down until it meets up with the remainder of the Ledge Spring trail. See recording for reference. Honestly, I like the alternate trail better. Once you get out of the picnic area, its a nice trail, with no steps!

Loop is not accessible. Only able to do out and back on the a climbing side of mountain. Still good and challenging hike. Watch for leaves during this time as it increases the possibility of slipping on was back down.

The Ledge Spring Trail up is really tough. The best part of the hike was the trail around the rock face to good views...could see all the peaks at Hanging Rock State Park. Took the Grindstone trail down. Did the 10 mile loop by starting at the Mountain Trail.

Be warned of crowds of non-hikers and the parking lot at the top. The trail itself is nice enough, lots of elevation near the middle. The views were nice at the top, but honestly the non-hikers and crowds up top ruined the experience for us. My wife and I went on a Saturday morning, maybe if it was during the week it would have been less busy.

Pilot Mountain is well worth it! The trail is definitely rocky at points so, high boots are recommend. Other than that, the trails are well maintained and the views are incredible

This trail was great and I highly recommend it. You have great views and it was mostly covered. Once at the top yes there is a parking lot but the views are worth it. Definitely hike up then back down to save your knees. Overall would do it again.
