This route begins at the Turkey Pen Gap parking lot and starts on the South Mills River Rd. It uses the Mullinax Trail, Squirrel Gap, and Pounding Mill trails before meeting up with the South Mills River Rd again.

Nice forest hike but yellow jackets are very active now. Counterclockwise, watch for the big Yellowjacket nest in the ground at the first or second creek crossing on Pounding Mill. Five of seven hikers got stung on this hike.

good hike. the section from squirrel Gap 2 South Mill is the nicest part of the hike. Pounding Mill is a little overgrown but it was kind of fun. several creek crossings on pounding mill and 1 Creek Crossing has a bee nest in the ground, I walked across the down tree to the left. I went counter clock wise on the loop.

The trail took me 2 hours 20 m. I enjoyed the Mullimax, Squirrel Gap & Pounding Milll sections, Quiet and more open forest compared to most trails in Pisgah Forest. Lots of bikers on the South Mill Rivers Road.
