Enjoyed our visit. Will return when the Sandburg house is open. Went in and around the loops. Pretty hike.

Very nicely maintained trail with a view at the top. Some good hills making it a nice 1.5-2 hour workout.

Trails are all open. Easy to follow with pretty views at the Big Glassy Mountain overlook. No views at Little Glassy, but adds a little extra workout to your hike. Taking the trail clockwise makes it a bit more challenging and uphill.

Because this is part of the national park system- Carl Sandburg home- it’s a very well maintained and well marked trail. It’s a nice little hike. My only complaint is that the trees at the top have over grown making it nearly impossible to see views. They are pines so year round it’s difficult. Really wish they would cut them because it’d be quite majestic from the top of big glassy.

Trail started from the hiking parking lot. There is a portable toilet there. Recent rain made it a bit muddy. There was some black ice on Glassy mountain. For those like me who are a bit slower there are benches along the way. View at the top is a bit obstructed by trees.

Well maintained trail and not too difficult. Good for all ability levels. Great view at the end particularly now with the leaves gone. It is worth it to hit little glassy as well with has a trail connecting two parts of this loop. Dogs must be on leash. Trail system is open even when the Carl Sandburg Home is closed.

Nice loop trail on the easy side of moderate. Well marked and maintained. The parking lot is small and also serves the Carl Sandberg Home National Historic Site. There is however plenty of parking just across the street at the Flat Rock Playhouse. Just know you will need to be gone by noon on matinee days, usually Wednesday and Sunday or you may find your car blocked by the theater goers. Currently they are closed until February 12.There is also a seperate hiker parking lot a bit further away. One aspect of the trail I like is there are several options down including over Little Glassy, by the goat barn and the Memminger Loop. If you have small ones they might enjoy the goat barns. Right now there is a decent view of Jump Off Rock at the summit, less so in the summer. Free trail maps are available in the gift shop of the Carl Sandberg Home.

Nature trips

Nice pond at entrance with parking lot and bathrooms. Well maintained, uphill trail that will get your pulse up, but not too bad. Several people on trail with leashed dogs but not overcrowded. I would advise going all the way to the top of Glassy Mtn. not just little glassy, as the view is pretty good. There's a old stone monument building just off the trail to the left near the top of glassy that's pretty cool. Plenty of benches along the way to rest on. Perfect hike for the beginner. Historical house and grounds definitely worth visiting. $8 to get a guided tour of inside of house, we went and it was pretty cool.

Nice little hike, lookout at end is nice in the fall when leaves are down. Sections are quite uphill but most of it was quite light.

A great trail, very enjoyable. Was a beautiful cool day. Very few bugs if any. Fall foliage was not present. A bit too early for this year. Moderate hike with very well maintained trails.

Great hike on a well maintained trail. It wasn’t very busy and there were plenty of hikers with dogs. The view from the top was limited by the foliage. We will be back at the end of October and anticipate the view will be better.

Nice 3 miler close to flat rock. Views at the top were good in summer but would be great with no foliage in winter. Very well-maintained. Saw several dog walkers. Good vertical gain for a 3-mi hike. Parking is at Carl Sandburg home parking lot.

Very well maintained trail. Great for families and people looking for a non-technical trail. It is a hike up a mountain so there is an elevation gain on the way out. The way back is all downhill. There are benches for resting throughout. The top has somewhat of a view from the top of mountain, but it is somewhat blocked by the high trees. It is still a decent view but not phenomenal. Overall, a good trail and experience.

I’ve been hiking this trail ever since I was a little girl and it’s very nostalgic for me. Easy, well-marked, and a decent view up top. It’s really more spectacular in the winter time when there is ice up there and it lives up to its “glassy” name. Also the view is easier to see with some of the tree leaves gone.

An excellent trail for families. Moderate uphill hike with the option of viewing the Sandburg's home and goats. We were surprised at how much our kids took away from this educationally.

Ok here’s the real scoop. First, the trails are spectacularly maintained. Muddy areas had been copiously covered with fresh mulch. Signage was excellent and the trail is excellent for dogs, children, well just about everyone. Well, maybe not everyone as there were some moderately strenuous parts but most of the endurance drain results from long stretches of a fairly healthy incline. Now, here’s the problem....once you get to Big Glassy Overlook, the requisite “reward” view you walked an hour to reach, well, it’s just not really there. Problem? Too many trees obscure the view of what appears to be a gorgeous valley below. This is even before the trees have leaves so in summer it would be oh so more blocked. There are tiny openings where you get teased about a great view, but meh it’s just not there. Quite a letdown to an otherwise nice trail.

Easy for a moderate trail (I mean there are benches every quarter of a mile.). Great view at the top. Goat barn was fun with some kids less than 24 hrs old.

This hike was on the easier end of moderate, but had a great payoff. There are benches located along the trail for those who wish to take a break, and a stunning view at the end! Trail is very well marked, and it would be impossible to get lost.
