Getting There

Nice hike along a treeless summit of rolling hills. From the parking area at Max Patch, the trail starts off going north. About 15 minutes into the hike you will come to a sign that indicates the AT to the left and the climb to the top of max Patch to the right. This short 100 yard trail to the top brings you to a grand 360 degree view of NC, TN and Mt. Mitchell to the North East. Simply beautiful. Retrace your steps and head north on the AT. Follow the AT and end this part of the trip at the Roaring Forks AT Shelter.Head south again on the AT and take the long loop trail along the backside of Max Patch. This trail will eventually bring you back to the parking lot where you started.

Beautiful hike. Berry bushes everywhere (not ripe unfortunately). Some of the path went through shaded areas. At the top it is spectacular. Can turn completely around and see for miles. Pretty easy hike. We took our time and were finished in about an hour. The driving to get here took longer, but it was worth it.

Awesome trail! Very easy hike! The sign is correct about the easiest path is to the left. The sunset was amazing! We camped just below the summit. Woke to heavy fog. Was surprised to see lots of tents right on the summit the next morning.

Absolutely positively stunning. Sign at trailhead to the left says easier. And it is! The road going up isn’t bad. Couple of potholes in places. So worth it.

Great trail with an awesome view. We did the easier hike up (on the left), enjoyed the view up top, and then took the loop back down the steeper side (stairs). The roads leading to the trail are pretty bumpy and washed out. I would suggest an SUV or truck for sure. Parking was a problem too. We went on Saturday around lunch. Just parked along the left side of the mountain.

Great trail. Easy family friendly hike. Spectacular 360 views. Discouraged to see random fire rings and trash left in the rings. Please stay on the marked trail. Evidence of erosion through posted natural wildlife areas. Gravel Roads aren’t that bad, although if traveling by car take it slower or it will be a bouncy ride.

I'm on the fence on giving this a good review, mainly the drive to the trailhead is on a gravel/compact mud road with potholes. the 6+ miles take about 40+ minutes each way. it's a bone jarring ride up and down no matter which road you take up. the main road is 1182 where the trailhead is. I had a small car so it might be better with an SUV, Overall, not worth the drive to hike 1.5 miles when place like Roan mountain have a better grassy bald if you like that kind of hike. not recommended for out of town folks visiting the smoky.

Great hike! Foggy at summit today, but good views from lower elevation. Steeper than was expecting but that could be the elevation I’m feeling.

Can anyone confirm that this parking lot and trail is now reopened? Also, is there a water source anywhere close to the summit of Max Patch?

Most of the road in is gravel, unpaved. We also had TICKS on us after sitting in the grass for 15’ or so. Im waiting to see if we’re getting rashes or anything worse from this.

Great trail to do with a young family. Its relatively easy. I'd say the hardest part is the hike up to the summit and may be more difficult for the little's. The top has great views and it is very open. I would recommend this trail.
