Nice hike along a treeless summit of rolling hills. From the parking area at Max Patch, the trail starts off going north. About 15 minutes into the hike you will come to a sign that indicates the AT to the left and the climb to the top of max Patch to the right. This short 100 yard trail to the top brings you to a grand 360 degree view of NC, TN and Mt. Mitchell to the North East. Simply beautiful. Retrace your steps and head north on the AT. Follow the AT and end this part of the trip at the Roaring Forks AT Shelter.Head south again on the AT and take the long loop trail along the backside of Max Patch. This trail will eventually bring you back to the parking lot where you started.

Great hike! Foggy at summit today, but good views from lower elevation. Steeper than was expecting but that could be the elevation I’m feeling.

Can anyone confirm that this parking lot and trail is now reopened? Also, is there a water source anywhere close to the summit of Max Patch?

Most of the road in is gravel, unpaved. We also had TICKS on us after sitting in the grass for 15’ or so. Im waiting to see if we’re getting rashes or anything worse from this.

Our loop was a little Different and less miles. It was an awesome hike and the kids loved it. Check out our full review. eastcoasthiker.com/trails/maxpatch

Great trail. Very easy. The trail is dirt so if it’s raining or has been raining be prepared for muddy conditions. On top you’re standing on a bald mountain so be prepared for a breeze. Great place for a picnic. Easy for kids as young as 6. My son made it round trip with no help whatsoever.

Heavily trafficked trail. Beautiful views. Great for hiking with dogs and kids.

MAX PATCH! This place is awesome. It was like a party on this open field in the middle of nowhere surrounded by mountains. Way cool. Check out my write up with things to look out for and directions. eastcoasthiker.com/trails/maxpatch/

Absolutely stunning, perfect distance for a short hike and the climb up isn't to bad. the road to get up to it though can be iffy at times.

Started at Max Patch. Hiked east on AT to Harmon Den and back, summiting Max Patch last. Enjoyable ridge line hike with some great filtered views. Max Patch, of course, has incredible views, but is a very short loop hike. I liked this mix of moderately challenging hiking with the views at the end.

I’m only writing a 4/5 because every person on that hill was getting ridiculous engagement photos done. No one was enjoying it. Just photographers catching the sunset and couples kissing everywhere for The photos. If you like to enjoy nature. This isn’t the place because there’s a good hundred people there at all times. Talking loudly or with their phones out not even looking at the beauty.

Great loop trail that is worth the drive up and down the mountain on gravel. Get to walk on a portion of the famous AT. A little muddy in places after the recent rain. Beautiful 360 degree view at the top. Can't imagine how much more amazing in the spring or fall. Blustery wind at the summit while we were there. Happy we made the stop on our way back to TN from Asheville.

The views are everything they said it would be. 360° of gorgeousness. The hike is very very easy, more like a walk. The gravel road going up was not bad at all and I drive a very low vehicle. Went early on a Sunday morning and I was very surprised at how many people were there. Very peopley but still breathtaking even on overcast days.

Awesome views on good weather days. Carolina Mountain Club does excellent trail maintenance there. Great place for sunrise/sunset. Easy trails for kids and dogs. Can walk a bit of the AT either NOBO or SOBO with ease.
