This trail is moderate with difficult sections. Trailhead is in parking area off Lookout Road. The trail crosses the Old Trestle Road and climbs steeply to end at exposed rocks below the summit of Lookout Mountain with outstanding views of Montreat and the Seven Sisters. Please stay on the marked trail; this mountain has many visitors and several old trails have been closed due to severe erosion problems.

Very fun hill with a scramble at the end. Well maintained and easy to follow. Took my daughter when she was 9 and she loved it (we did this and the 7 sisters loop.) Love running down.

Can combine with other Montreat trails to make a loop and make it longer.

The views awaiting you at the top are spectacular!!

We took our whole youth group of high schoolers and made it to the top of the mountain in about 30 minutes. We spent about 30 minutes enjoying the view and taking many photos with the youth. Only a few of the kids had to take short breaks on the way up but all made it to the top and really were grateful for having decided to make this climb the thing to do on their free day.

If you are looking for a heart pumper and you are in the area - go for it! I tend to go for scenery- not much to look at on the way up. Top view was good but small vista area that can get crowded.

This is a short but uphill hike the entire way with rewarding views at the end. The very last section leading to the summit is a bit of a rock scramble, but even the pups handled it like champs. The summit is small and could get really crowded when there are a lot of people and dogs. The trail was very muddy when I went after a rainy period so watch your footing.

Fun short hike, though the incline/decline is quite strenuous. We hiked it in the rain and the rocks were still fairly easy to navigate!

Loved this hike—quick but strenuous! It’s a steady climb on a well marked trail. It begins to get rocky and requires a slight bit of “climb” on the last stretch. The views at the top are lovely... not as vast as some other hikes I’ve done in the area (looking glass, john’s rock), but beautiful and a great reward for a shorter hike. The 4 vs 5 Star is primarily for the small space at the top. There were quite a few people, we had our dogs, and there was very little room for us to rest and take in the sights. Would definitely do it again!

Loved the challenges this hike presented. The views are worth it.

a beautiful view at the top! would say it's a difficult hike, but doable.

My new favorite hike in the region. I went past the lookout towards the ‘second summit’ and went to rattlesnake as well. It’s a pretty strenuous hike, but it’s absolutely worth it. Especially when you continue on to rattlesnake. (It’s only about .7 mile further.) Don’t let the length of the trail fool you, it might be short, but it’ll kick your butt! Definitely coming back!

Not a bad hike. Good workout as it's all uphill. Rock scramble at top was pretty easy to negotiate. I might recommend a rope or some kind of hand rail particularly for smaller children or older folks. We went in the summer so the views were ok. Probably better in the winter or late fall.

On June 9 Family decided to check this out, randomly after breakfast, in flip flops! Steep incline but the trail itself had good footing. View wasn’t worth the climb tho as steep rocks prevented us from navigating that at the top. It was a good workout

Most of the hike is a fairly steep incline. There are only a couple parts that require climbing over rocks, but overall it's clearly marked and has steps for the steeper sections. Beautiful view at the top that's totally worth it! Has a small spot with shade that's nice for packing lunch as well.

Scramble at the top not good for anyone scared of heights

This was a very steep and strenuous climb, but the trail was a lot of fun, it's very narrow and deceiving, when you think it's about to level out, it just keeps on climbing.

Love this trail! Climb it every chance we get!!

First time hiker and my fiance and I truly enjoyed going up this rather short trail. It was steep, but not scary and very quick to a peak with great views and good picture spots.

600+ ft of elevation in about 0.6 miles with a rock scramble at the top. We went just after a soaking rain, so there were lots of mud puddles and wet rocks resulting in some unsure footing. Other than that, the hike was challenging and rewarding with beautiful views at the top.

This one was a little tough, but quick. 600+ feet in elevation gain in just over half a mile. Nice view at the top overlooking Black Mountain. Continued from here to get to the Rattlesnake Mtn trail. I did about 4 miles to the two peaks and back.

35 minutes to the top. Awesome views! Easy on the way down . We brought our great dane

Relatively easy climb with a great payoff at the top. There is a bit of a rock scramble to get to the lookout area. When we went all trails except for the lookout trail were closed so we couldn’t add any length onto the 1.1 mile loop.

It was a workout for us that are in the 6o’s we did it ... AND it was called exercise ... LOL LOTS OF STEPS ... at the top there are rocks to climb... it was quite nice

Good view up top. Steep in some parts then very craggy at the summit. That said, be careful coming back down!

Nice trail and allows connection to East Ridge trail to create a loop. Rocks above trestle are slick
