The trail is very well marked with white blazes for the longer loop. The shorter trail some people mention in their reviews is blazed in red. Markers with distance placed every half mile to help track time and distance. The trail offers great views of the lake with several stops along the water for the dogs to drink.

This trail was great! Labeled really well with really nice views of the lake. You can stop and fish. There were some really nice calming spots that had the perfect breeze. Definitely moderate. Don’t underestimate this trail, specially towards the end. You can do the entire lakeshore trail and then loop around again to the shortcut loop for an added 3 miles. Overall we totaled 9 miles completing both. Worth the drive from Charlotte for a Saturday morning hike. It was muddy and slippery because it’s been raining a lot. Get there early. Happy Trails!

If you are in the area and need a place to go burn off a few calories.....it's better than a treadmill or a Planet Fitness. Nothing to go out of your way for and no special scenery to speak of. Good spot to take kids and dogs because there are other things to do as well.

If you want to see wildlife go as early as possible, probably true for any trail. but we saw blacksnakes, copperheads, deer, and Hawks aplenty. the trail is undulating with parts that are smooth and others full of roots. The constant changes in grade was enjoyable but challenging towards the end as the legs got fatigued. with all the rain there are some muddy slippery spots but way less then I would have thought. very well marked trails. the morning was peacefull but by 11am the sound of jetskies and powerboats was dominant. we stayed on the Lakeshore trail and didn't take the shortcuts shown in AT so we ended up with a 6.9 mile hike. Altogether a great hike reasonably close to Charlotte if you go early.

Excellent for trail running. Some spots needs more attention after rains but overall not super technical. Mostly shady and decent water views. Because of a recent change after mile marker four actual distance is around 5.5 miles.

Best thing about this trail is the lake views. Fairly easy, so not sure I would rate moderate. Lots of shade so a good choice during warmer days. Several little secluded sandy areas for dogs to swim and cool off.

For a shorter but equally enjoyable time, connect the white-blazed Lakeshore to the red-blazed Short Turn trail to head back to the car a little sooner. This was a sunny day, but the trail is cool and shaded even in winter by mixture of pines and beech trees. Lots of dogs as usual. Muddy from recent rains but leaf cover helped with the walk.

Nice hiking trail. Went after the rain and I love the scent of the woods after the rain. It does get muddy and slippery so wear good boots. Trail is well marked and has benches at locations with nice views.

Nice hike. Very muddy after a rain. The sign says 5 miles, but it’s more like 5 1/2 miles.

The trail was great with a lot of ppl today & very busy we got they early did the loop , so every crowd as we lefts the park at 1 PM

Great trail, well marked, very enjoyable and beautiful.

One of the best trails outside of Charlotte, NC! I love this trek every time I come out here. Rained this morning but stopped halfway through my hike.. This is one of the best “marked” trails you’re going to find, hands down. There are a total of 443 blazes (markers) from beginning to end. If you’re using the AllTrails App, you will get an “off trail” warning, just ignore it ... as long as you see the diamond shaped white placards (blazes), you’re good. After the 4 mile mark, the blazes are not marked for part of the section but will pick up again along the trail. I imagine some erosion has occurred over the years and the trail needed some adjustments. This trail traces the perimeter of Lake Norman and doesn’t disappoint in terms of scenery. Various elevations offer most hikers a little burn but be careful if you’re a trail runner. Trail is well marked, scenic, and has benches for sitting throughout. The Lake Shore Trail has a public restroom just past blaze #253. It was fairly wet during my hike but perfectly doable as long as you’re alert. There are various sinkholes and elevations throughout the trail so probably not a good idea to run while trails are wet. Oh yea ... I hiked 6.9 miles, I don’t know where 5.3 miles came from : / If you’re traveling this way ... ya gotta do this one. Happy Trails !!
