Great mix of paved trail and wooded areas, wonderful views of the lake. Good 6 mile hike around the lake following blue arrow signs that are well marked. Dog loved it, she also swam a bit in the lake and fetched a few sticks! Gonna do this again soon.

This is one of my favorite trails in the RTP area. The blue dotted trail named The Lake Trail is about a 6 mile loop. It comes across wooded areas, fields of wild flowers, and beautiful views of Lake Crabtree. At first it seems off because after a cute little path you’re walking right next to traffic for about .5 miles. But keep going..I promise it gets better! The best part of this trail is it has so many different views. It keeps it interesting. Downside: It is closed often if there has been any rain due to a lot of the trail gets easily washed out. It also can be a bit buggy with some spider webs..so make sure to wear bug spray and wave a stick in front of you when walking through more narrow parts of the trail and you’ll be fine.

Picked this trail because it seemed like a nice distance, was dog friendly, and we typically like trails that go around lakes. Started counterclockwise from parking lot. There was a short nice stretch of grassland then a nice forested area but within a half mile we encountered a long stretch of walking between the lake and the highway with cars speeding by Athens level. The way was littered with token glass and I worried about my dogs paw pads. Then there was a nice forested stretch where you could see the lake. Then we can to mowed stretches of grass behind buildings. About 2 miles in we decided to turn back. I am not sure if it would have gotten nicer, but I think in the future I would pick a different trail. One good thing is that there wasn’t any poison ivy to run into.
