Jordan Lake Poplar Trail is a 3.5 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near New Hill, North Carolina that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, running, and nature trips.
When the lake floods, portions of this trail may become impassable or require off trail hiking.
While the hike is enjoyable, the trail markings leave much to be desired. Parts of the trail were flooded, which meant a few simple to serious detours. The only wildlife we saw were a few birds and a small lizard.
Note that this trail is located within the poplar point campsite and technically you’re supposed to have an advanced reservation to get in. That said, I managed to get in and run the trail, which was descent. There’s nothing really special about the trail, and it’s sometimes hard to pick up the trail when it crosses roads. I’d say it’s probably not worth going out of your way for, but if you’re near it and want to get on a trail, you can try it out for yourself if you wish.
The trail is not much traveled and at times was tough to follow at times, though eventually we always found the trail markers. We had trouble finding the trail head and ended up parking at the boat ramp, walking on the road a bit and starting a forward of the trail head. As the lake has a lot of water because of rain, we found a few spots were we had to go off trail to get around flooded area, not a big inconvenience and will add to the adventure if you like that kind of thing. The loops you can see on the map include a lot of paved campsite access road. All in all, it was and enjoyable 90 minutes in the woods.
