Green Ridge to Green Knob is a 0.9 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Old Fort, North Carolina that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Good workout- quite steep for the first 1.5 miles. I went up to the fire tower, which is closed (Jan 2021), but great views from the steps. Path to the waterfall is very steep, eroded, muddy - you have to slide ~15 feet down a slick rock face.
Good leg stretcher. Easy unless elevation changes are hard for you.
Easy trail... Noone knows it is there. Great place to see some color.
Felt like a waste of time, compared to other hikes we've done along the Blue Ridge Parkway The trailhead is not visible from the parking area, you have to walk down the road for a stretch then cross it. The trail itself is a steep series of switchbacks with large stones that help with the mud but don't solve it completely. In theory there's a lookout off to the right on the way up, but in reality it was too blocked by foliage to be able to see anything. There was also barely any view from the top because the trees are as tall as or taller than the lookout tower. It's better than 1 star since it's clear some maintenance has been done, but I'm disappointed we chose this as one of our hikes today.
The tower platform is still locked :( but the views and the breeze from the top of the stairs was more than worth the quick hike.
The trail itself is excellently maintained by NC high peaks and recently re-done. The forest itself is OK, but the main goal, the fire tower, is locked so the view is very limited. The tower looks new and in very good shape. I have no idea why it is locked. It is a pity.
