This is a beautiful trail, a little overgrown, but takes you on a little journey of discovery. The serenity of the forest overcomes you. The traffic noise and airplane sounds seems like distant hums. The trail splits one too many times so you have to watch for the white blazes on the trees. I have run the Umstead Loblolly Trail but could not find the connector to Schenck Forest once I get to Reedy Creek. I finally found it by starting the run from Schenck Forest. It's about 2.5 miles to get to the sign (State Trail Ends Here) in the Umstead SP Loblolly Trail. Returning back, I lost the trail somewhere where the silt covered it and ended up on the middle instead of the perimeter Richland Creek Trail. All the more reason to come back and experience the forest once again.

This is a dense forest run by NCSU. Some short trails that take you through some old growth, some dense pine thickets, and along streambeds. Interesting signage along the way tells you about the forest and what goes on. Good training ground for forestry. Trail needs some maintenance as the markers are in disrepair, plus the trails are not well marked. There is a faint white blaze but that is also the blaze used on the Richland Creek trail, which parallels the edge of Schenck Forest. The Richland Creek Trail is a bit more interesting and we combined the two to make a nice little 3 mile loop.

Trail is not clearly marked. I ended up following the creek path, because it was the only thing that resembled a trail. Very creepy feeling. You could tell that it was beautiful once upon a time, but everything looks abandoned. It'd make an excellent Halloween trail.

Beautiful day, very scenic with lots of fork options. Ended it by finding a four leaf clover
